The Philadelphia Eagles fans have spent the past few weeks waiting for their team to turn things around, but Monday night brought another loss and even more questions about where the season is headed.
The Dallas Cowboys pulled away after the Eagles briefly took the lead, leaving a depleted Philadelphia roster with little to show for its fight.
Now, the frustration is reaching the coaching staff, with Nick Sirianni facing growing questions about how much time he has left to fix things.
The Cowboys beat Philadelphia 38-21 on Monday night, closing the Week 7 slate by handing the Eagles their fifth straight loss.
Philadelphia briefly led 21-20 in the third quarter after rookie Makai Lemon’s touchdown catch, but Dallas answered with 18 unanswered points to take control. The Eagles, which rank 30th in PFN NFL Offense Impact%20assigns,red%20zone%20and%20third%20downs.), fell to 2-5, while the Cowboys improved to 3-4 and stayed in the NFC East race.
Philadelphia entered the game without Jalen Hurts, who is out for just about the rest of the season with blood clots, while wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks also missed Week 7 with injuries.
Saquon Barkley returned briefly from a hamstring issue to score, but later suffered a setback. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee’s fourth-quarter interception further hurt the Eagles’ chances.
The nature of the loss raised questions about Sirianni’s job security.
One fan posted on X, “Is Nick Sirianni the HC of this football team tomorrow?”
The timing of a possible coaching change also became a topic of discussion. The Ringer staff writer Diante Lee wrote, “Eagles bye is in week 10. There’s no way he gets there, right?”
With the bye approaching, the question is whether Philadelphia’s leadership will give Sirianni more time or use the break to make a change.
Some fans were already imagining who could replace him. Popular Philly personality CuffsTheLegend wrote, “Mike Tomlin gonna take the Philadelphia Eagles job after they fire Nick Sirianni.”
That, however, is simply speculation, given he’s the biggest free agent name available.
Others sounded less interested in a replacement than in the end of Sirianni’s tenure.
“Bro’s exhausted, he had a good run,” one fan wrote, suggesting that his previous accomplishments may not be enough to protect him from the team’s current results.
The Birds Blitz account also questioned the direction of the team, posting, “This feels like the end of the Nick Sirianni Era. This defense is barely even trying at this point in a one-score game.”
Sirianni accepted responsibility after the game, saying that everything on the field was his responsibility and that the coaching staff needed to do better. “We’ve got to do a better job coaching,” Sirianni said. “We’ve got to do a better job executing, getting off blocks, tackling.”
Meanwhile, Troy Aikman, who was in the booth alongside Joe Buck on the Monday Night Football broadcast, said, “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Howie Roseman is looking to sell some assets.”
The Eagles have about two weeks before the Nov. 10 trade deadline draws near, and with Hurts’ health up in the air, injuries ravaging the roster, and a shaky defense, there is a possibility that Howie Roseman could look to gather some assets and retool for next season, rather than see what shakes out for the rest of this campaign.
