Ranking every F1 champion ever with Lewis Hamilton second but Nico Rosberg 26th

Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion but how does he compare to Lewis Hamitlon et al?

The 2026 Formula 1 season still has a few more weeks to run but the title is done and dusted. Kimi Antonelli has secured his first Drivers’ Championship, with his third-place finish in Mexico City sealing the deal. The Italian was already on the cusp of glory before taking to the start line on Sunday. Ultimately, he didn’t even need to win the race to confirm his status as the youngest ever F1 title winner, barely two months after his 20th birthday. But how does he compare to the other 35 men to win the drivers’ title?

There are plenty of qualities we need to consider when ranking all those winners. The number of titles is obviously a factor - those with multiple wins are always likely to come out on top over those who were one-and-done - but there are more factors at play than that. We’ve also looked at their performances in those seasons when they didn’t win it all, while career longevity is balanced against an ability to keep an extremely high standard throughout. Check out Express Sport's full ranking of all 36 F1 champions below...

36. Mike Hawthorn

Just one title and only a handful of race wins before his untimely death just months after retiring. An accomplished driver but the standards are high on this list. (Image: Getty)

35. Denny Hulme

New Zealand's only world champion, winning in 1967. Remarkably didn't qualify in pole position in a single race in his title-winning season. (Image: Getty)

34. John Surtees

An accomplished motorcycle racer before turning his attention to F1. Only claimed the one title, and by the narrowest of margins. (Image: Getty)

33. Jenson Button

Button capped his career with one especially hot season delivering his sole title. Won six Grands Prix of the 17 available during his 2009 triumph and also had a second and third in the drivers’ standings on either side. (Image: Getty)

32. Jody Sheckter

South Africa’s only champ was another one-and-done winner. However, he secured a number of other high finishes in the championship. (Image: Getty)
