Cowboys legend Troy Aikman said this week that he would welcome a conversation with Jerry Jones about a potential role in Dallas, and that he would have a hard time turning down the chance to contribute if Jones came to him with something.

Aikman spent 12 seasons as the face of the franchise and won three Super Bowls during the 1990s but has held no formal role with the organization since retiring. His relationship with the Cowboys owner has carried complications alongside the shared history. This week, he addressed where both stand.

Troy Aikman Opens The Door to Potential Cowboys Reunion With Jerry Jones

Jones selected Aikman with the first overall pick of the 1989 NFL Draft, the very first pick of his tenure as owner. Aikman was 22 years old when he arrived in Dallas, and over the next 12 seasons the two built one of the most successful partnerships in franchise history, winning Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX in a four-year stretch during the 1990s.

That history has not really translated to a formal professional relationship since Aikman retired after the 2000 season. During a recent appearance on Mike Fisher’s “Fish Report,” when the Hall of Fame QB was asked about his willingness to sit down with Jones, Aikman was straightforward.

“Oh, I absolutely would. I mean, I would have lunch, breakfast, or dinner with Jerry anytime he wants it, and it wouldn’t necessarily have to be because it’s a job interview,” Aikman said.

He explained how far back the relationship goes and why it’s special: “Just because we go back a long way, a little longer than even you and I. When I came in, I was 22 years old. I was his very first draft pick. There’s a lot within that relationship, both from the beginning, when he began as the owner and I began my NFL career as a quarterback, to the 12 years I spent playing for him and even the years that have followed.”

He was candid about where things stand between them now, putting a name to the friction while pointing to what he believes still holds the relationship together.

“We’ve been through a lot. We’ve been through the highest of highs and some pretty tough moments as well. Our relationship is complicated. I think he would agree with that. But it’s one that’s built, I believe, on respect,” Aikman said.

He closed with the clearest statement of where he stands on a potential opportunity.

“This week, he said some really kind things, which meant a lot to me, quite honestly. So, yeah, I would welcome any conversation with Jerry. And quite honestly, I don’t know if there would be or if there ever would be an opportunity, but if Jerry came to me and felt in his heart that I could lend some services that would help make them better, I’d have a hard time not taking a good look at that,” Aikman said.

Aikman spent his entire playing career in Dallas, throwing for 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns across 165 regular-season games with a passer rating of 81.6. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, and the three championships he and Jones won in the 1990s remain the last Super Bowl titles in franchise history.

Aikman previously expressed interest in contributing to Dallas’ front office, but instead worked as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins during their 2026 general manager and head-coaching searches. According to Front Office Sports, that arrangement did not extend into a formal, ongoing role.”

He touched on it in May when asked whether the Cowboys missing out on his services stung. “I have a 12-year history with the organization. And then it’s right in my backyard; obviously, that would have been ideal,” he said.
