Arsenal Track £21m Striker After Flying Start: Should Arteta Pursue Him?

Arsenal transfer news: Arsenal have made another strong start to the season after winning the 2025–26 Premier League title, taking 18 points from their opening seven matches. Mikel Arteta’s side have recorded six wins and one defeat, while their recent 2-2 draw away to Bayern Munich tested them against elite European opposition.

The Gunners have invested heavily in their attack, with Viktor Gyökeres leading the line and Kai Havertz offering another option through his movement and ability to link midfield with the forward line. Arteta values forwards who press aggressively, combine in tight spaces and create room for runners such as Bukayo Saka. With established options already available, Arsenal can afford to be selective about another centre-forward, although a young prospect could still offer a different profile for the longer term.

That context makes the latest report particularly interesting. La Gazzetta dello Sport, in a story relayed by Transfer Feed, reports that Arsenal have shown interest in Monza striker Gustavo Varela. The 21-year-old has made an impressive start to the 2026–27 campaign, scoring seven goals and supplying one assist in seven Serie A appearances, before adding two goals in the Coppa Italia. His return stands at nine goals in eight matches across those competitions.

The right-footed forward is 1.84 metres tall and has the physical strength with sharp movement inside the penalty area. His pressing could appeal to Arteta, while his direct running might offer a different option alongside Gyökeres and Havertz. Arsenal would still need to establish whether he could contribute immediately or require time to adjust to the Premier League.

However, any potential move would involve more than agreeing a fee with Monza. According to the report, Benfica hold no buy-back clause but retain the right to match a future offer, alongside 20% of Monza’s capital gain from a sale. A fee around £13 million to £17 million would therefore require careful negotiation.

Arsenal transfer news: Should Arsenal pursue Varela despite Benfica’s contractual rights?

Arsenal should monitor the situation, but they needn’t rush into a bidding contest. Nine goals in eight matches make Varela an exciting prospect, yet one prolific run doesn’t guarantee an immediate impact in the Premier League. With Gyökeres and Havertz already competing for central roles, the club should first establish whether Varela offers a distinct tactical option and a clear route into the first team.

Benfica’s matching right could also weaken Arsenal’s negotiating position, while the profit clause may encourage Monza to seek a higher fee. Unless the recruitment team sees a clear long-term role for the Italian-based forward, Arsenal would be wiser to preserve their budget for a more pressing squad need.
