County Times rugby Fantastic Five stars of the weekend

Brecon, Builth Wells, Ystradgynlais and COBRA all recorded wins, while COBRA Athletic produced the biggest score of the weekend with their 59-7 success at Flint.

Here are this week’s Fantastic Five, featuring two representatives from Ystradgynlais alongside three of the leading individual scorers from the weekend.

Shaun Hurford – Ystradgynlais

Shaun Hurford earns his place in this week’s Fantastic Five after Ystradgynlais edged Aberavon Green Stars 17-13 in a close Admiral National League 1 West Central encounter.

Ystradgynlais had tries from Alex Jones and Richard Murphy, while Iwan Evans contributed seven points from the boot with two conversions and a penalty.

The four-point victory completed a successful afternoon for Ystradgynlais and gives Hurford his place alongside team-mate Keenan Davies in this week’s County Times selection.

Keenan Davies – Ystradgynlais

Keenan Davies gives Ystradgynlais a second representative following their 17-13 victory over Aberavon Green Stars in Admiral National League 1 West Central.

It was a closely fought contest, with Alex Jones and Richard Murphy crossing for the tries and Iwan Evans kicking two conversions and a penalty.

The victory was one of several for County Times sides higher up the Welsh rugby pyramid, with Ystradgynlais joining Brecon, Builth Wells and COBRA in recording wins.

Lee Hughes – COBRA Athletic

Lee Hughes produced the largest individual try haul in the supplied round-up as COBRA Athletic swept to a 59-7 victory at Flint in Admiral National League 3 North East.

Hughes crossed three times as Athletic ran in nine tries, with Ben Davies contributing another two and Charlie Cooper Harding, Frazer Roberts and Harri Tudor also touching down alongside a penalty try.

His hat-trick was accompanied by the man-of-the-match award, giving Hughes one of the standout performances of the weekend.

Mike Silvester – Llanidloes

Mike Silvester contributed 21 points as Llanidloes came agonisingly close to completing a stirring comeback in their 45-41 defeat against Rhosllanerchrugog.

Silvester crossed twice during Llanidloes’ fightback from three tries behind, while Craig Evans, Lewis Jones, Morgan Davies and Richard Pryce were their other try scorers.

Silvester also landed four conversions and a penalty, completing an impressive individual points haul despite Llanidloes finishing on the wrong side of the result.

Aled Davies – COBRA

Aled Davies made his mark as COBRA recorded an emphatic 33-0 victory over Bethesda in Admiral National League 1 North.

Davies crossed twice, while Joss Davies, Iwan Vaughan and Nathan Jones also scored tries as COBRA kept their opponents scoreless.

Davies added a conversion to his two tries for a 12-point personal contribution, rounding off this week’s Fantastic Five.
