Maximo Quiles has opened up about the intense emotional impact he experienced as a seven-year-old watching the fierce and controversial 2015 MotoGP title battle between his idol Marc Marquez and the legendary Valentino Rossi. The young Spaniard admits he was left both “angry and crying” as the drama between the two giants unfolded on the grand stage of premier-class motorcycle racing.
The 2015 season remains etched in MotoGP history for its unprecedented rivalry between Marquez and Rossi. Marquez, who had swiftly risen to dominance aboard his Honda by claiming six riders’ championships between 2013 and 2019, faced one of his toughest challenges in Valentino Rossi. The Italian, a multiple world champion himself, believed Marquez deliberately interfered with his title ambitions by assisting Jorge Lorenzo, his Yamaha teammate, in their battle for the crown.
The flashpoint came at the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island, where Rossi accused Marquez of not pushing for victory in order to impede him and favour Lorenzo’s championship quest. This explosive incident ignited a bitter feud, which escalated further at the Malaysian Grand Prix. There, Rossi’s infamous on-track clash with Marquez—culminating in Rossi seemingly kicking Marquez off his bike—led to a penalty forcing Rossi to start the Valencia finale from the back of the grid, effectively costing him the 2015 title.
Quiles, now the reigning Moto3 world champion and a protege of Marquez, vividly recalls the anguish of that turbulent season. “I remember 2015 very clearly,” Quiles told Motorbike Magazine. “When there was that legendary clash between Marc and Valentino, something about when Marc crashed and they made contact, and I remember crying under the bed there, [and] all angry under the living room table, all angry and crying, and thinking, ‘Oh, it’s nothing.’ I really got caught up in it. The truth is, he’s always been my idol since I was a kid.”
Further adding fuel to the fire was the earlier collision between Rossi and Marquez at the Argentine Grand Prix, where Rossi emerged victorious despite their contact. This moment laid the foundation for the acrimony that would define their rivalry throughout the season.
Looking ahead, Quiles is set to join the CFMoto Aspar Moto2 team in 2027, where he will be teammates with VR46 Riders Academy’s Celestino Vietti, intertwining once again with the legacy of Rossi and Marquez. Quiles will remain with CFMoto Aspar following his 2026 Moto3 title win, while Vietti transitions from SpeedRS Team to join the Spanish outfit.
Quiles’ candid reflection underscores the lasting impact of the 2015 season’s drama on a new generation of riders, highlighting the enduring legacy of one of MotoGP’s most explosive rivalries.
