This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired running back and NFL Players Choir member Dwayne Wright.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Wright discussed his participation in 'The NFL Players Choir' and their recent performance of the National Anthem at Arrowhead Stadium ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 2 game this season. He opened up about what inspired him to join after retiring from the NFL.
"I was a rookie in Buffalo in '07, and I remember Mike (Gaines) talking about, like, singing and doing all of these things. I'm like, man, okay, I didn't know anything about a choir," Wright said, "and over the years, I kind of just did my own thing. Then I was singing praise and worship with my pastor, and the next thing you know, I sent the clip to Mike Gaines."
The Buffalo Bills selected Wright in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He also played for the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.
"I got a call that Sunday night, and then I was flying out to Pasadena for 'America's Got Talent'. I walked in, and I'm like, I knew half of the room already just from football and things of that nature, and I just felt at home," said Wright. "That's when I knew this brotherhood was important. Singing praise and worship my whole life, watching my grandmother in church, and being with my family made it all make sense. Away from our craziness, we come together and actually have therapy. It's literally our therapy every time we get together. When we were on 'America's Got Talent', it was a different experience. It was COVID time."
The NFL Players Choir gained national recognition by appearing on NBC's America's Got Talent and has been featured at the annual Super Bowl Soulful Celebration, among other high-profile events.
"We knew then that something had to come with this. We're retired NFL players; we've been on the field, putting it down, getting injured for other folks," said Wright. "But we never had the mindset to relax, share, and use the talent or gift God gave us on that platform. So I knew this was special."
