Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is set to receive a record-breaking offer - but not from Chelsea or Liverpool.
Article continues under the videoThe England star is poised to be one of the protagonists of the January transfer window. Already in the summer, Scott was being chased by numerous clubs, with Chelsea his most persistent suitors.
The West London giants made several offers for the 23-year-old, but Bournemouth rejected all approaches for their star midfielder. They had no intention of sanctioning his exit and held out hope of extending his contract.
In recent weeks, that optimism has dissipated to some extent. Reports have suggested that the Cherries have agreed to potentially allow Scott to leave in January following talks with his representatives. This, however, is predicated on two things.
Firstly, Bournemouth's asking price has to be met, although how much they actually want is the subject of debate. Some have suggested that it could take as much as €120 million, but this has been disputed by others. The second condition is that the Cherries can't be in danger of relegation.
The reports of Bournemouth possibly allowing Scott to depart mid-season came as a big boon to Liverpool and especially to Chelsea. The 23-year-old is the Blues' top target heading into 2027, and there have been sensational claims that a Stamford Bridge move is "inevitable."
Despite all these rumours, Bournemouth have not yet fully given up on tying Scott down to a new deal, even though their efforts appear to be in vain. According to TEAMtalk, owner Bill Foley has sanctioned another club-record contract offer.
Scott has already rebuffed numerous overtures from the South Coast outfit. Earlier this month, it was asserted that Scott had rejected the chance to become Bournemouth's highest-paid player. The next offer will be even more lucrative.
Foley confirmed last week that he was desperate for Scott to stay at the Vitality Stadium, but he acknowledged that it is easy for the Cherries' players to "get stars in their eyes" when bigger clubs come calling.
"We’d love to have Alex stay here and sign a new contract and be part of this team for the long haul," he told talkSPORT. "We haven’t given up, but sometimes players get stars in their eyes, and they think that Chelsea or Manchester City is the right place to go.
"We have to respect the fact that a lot of our players are younger, and they’ve come to Bournemouth with the expectation that they’ll get time to play and perhaps move on to a bigger team."
Foley and Bournemouth's recruitment department will continue to try and persuade Scott to stay put - but they are clearly fighting an uphill battle. The player seems to have his heart set on leaving, and it would be a major twist in the tale if he were to extend his deal beyond 2028.
