Rangers turn up heat on leaders Celtic despite controversy in Paisley

Rangers extend unbeaten away record with a composed Paisley display to move within touching distance of leaders Celtic

A bitterly cold, damp Saturday night in Paisley yielded precisely the sort of calculated, business-like victory that defines title credentials. Under the floodlights of the Marbill Coaches Stadium, Rangers maintained their pursuit of league leaders Celtic with a dominant 2-0 win over St Mirren.

In truth, the scoreline scarcely reflected the visitors’ control of proceedings, a superiority anchored by a dominant midfield display and punctuated by goals from Ryan Naderi and Dan Neil in either half.

This was an exercise in efficiency for Rangers manager Derek McInnes as his side arrived in Renfrewshire looking to maintain their unbeaten away record in the league this season. Making just one change from last weekend’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final triumph over Aberdeen, his side displayed a fluid composure that left the hosts chasing shadows for long periods.

Although Rangers have endured an inconsistent record on previous visits to Paisley, dropping points in three of their last four league outings, their latest success extended a domestic unbeaten run to 12 matches and left them in a confident place heading into the final international break of the year.

St Mirren, under the stewardship of Craig McLeish, had promised a robust, positive approach as they looked to arrest a worrying slide in form that had saw them lose six of their previous eight games. However, the reality for the Buddies was an evening spent largely in a low defensive block, starved of possession and unable to test Ivor Pandur in the visitors' goal until it was too late.

The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute through a moment of controversy. Right-back James Penrice drove into the penalty area and went down under pressure from a trailing Samuel Ramos leg. While the home support vociferously claimed the new Scotland call-up went down theatrically, referee Nick Walsh pointed directly to the spot.

Naderi stepped forward, ignored the jeers, and showed admirable composure to confidently dispatch the penalty into the bottom right-hand corner, with Jacob Chapman diving the opposite direction.

Going behind did little to alter St Mirren’s conservative shape as their build-up play lacked urgency, and Rangers continued to dictate the tempo. Their front three of Badredine Bouanani, Kim Minsu, and Kevin Kelsy probed intelligently. The hosts did have a penalty appeal of their own dismissed when Ramos’ header back across goal appeared to strike Naderi’s hand.

The second half followed an identical script, and the definitive blow arrived just after the hour mark. It was a goal engineered by the persistent work of Kelsy who battled fiercely on the flank to retrieve a loose ball under pressure.

His determination allowed the ball to break kindly to Neil, restored to the starting line-up, on the edge of the box and the midfielder side-footed effort took a wicked deflection of Calvin Ramsay to completely wrong-foot the helpless Chapman, with the ball nestling in the bottom left-hand corner. It gave Rangers some welcome breathing room.

St Mirren did mount a late, spirited assault on the visitors goal, but were denied on several occasions by Pandur. Their best opportunity fell to substitute Eseosa Sule, who met a pinpoint cross from Declan John at the back post. It seemed a certain goal, but the Croatian goalkeeper produced a sublime reaction save to preserve his clean sheet.

Ultimately, McInnes’s men navigated the closing stages with a minimum of fuss, starving the hosts of the ball and suffocating any remaining glimmers of a late comeback. The victory keeps them firmly within striking distance at the summit, a solitary point behind of reigning champions Celtic, who play Kilmarnock on Sunday.
