Liverpool has made "contact" over a potential transfer target, as the club looks ahead to potential future arrivals in the market.
The Reds are still looking to see the impact of the previous summer of business, which saw plenty of money spent once again to bolster the forward ranks and the defense. That sets up some potential changes in the midfield in the near future, as doubts have continued to rise over the current balance of the options available to Andoni Iraola in the squad.
There could be some changes as a result, with returning sporting director Julian Ward already making preparations for the coming transfer windows at Liverpool.
With that in mind, Sky Germany reports that the Reds have already made contact over a potential switch for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha.
Those early discussions have been with the player's representatives, as the early groundwork for future markets begins.
The interest is not new, as the Reds have been linked with the German international in the past few months, after a $114.5 million transfer price tag was touted.
As it stands, however, Liverpool is not preparing a transfer offer for Borussia Dortmund, with the interest in Nmecha, 26, still seemingly at an early stage, while the Bundesliga outfit is not currently concerned about an exit.
Nmecha has a deal with Dortmund until 2030, meaning his future is sealed for now. The star has emerged as one of several potential midfield options for the Reds, with a shortlist of potential names already seemingly being drawn up.
The report claims that Monaco ace Lamine Camara and Bournemouth's Alex Scott are names "higher" on the shortlist than Nmecha, with both players being listed as "top candidates" for the role.
It certainly sets up an interesting situation for Liverpool, as it looks ahead to an area of the pitch that could need strengthening over the next year.
The early pursuit of another midfielder may suggest some change could be coming in the central ranks in the near future. With Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch tied down to new deals, adding another player in addition to Alexis Mac Allister could see too much depth in one area compared to other parts of the pitch.
However, that could then create further speculation over the future of Mac Allister in particular. The Argentinian is approaching the final 18 months of his contract with Liverpool, and reports have suggested a new one won't be offered yet, despite his recent form.
It remains to be seen what that could mean for the World Cup winner, as Liverpool starts to plot out some potential future transfer switches.
