Roy Keane given green light for Man Utd role as ex-player backs David Beckham to run club

It comes as the Manchester United hierarchy face mounting pressure

The prospect of David Beckham and Roy Keane joining forces has been touted as a potential solution to revive Manchester United's fortunes. Discontent with the Glazers' stewardship and INEOS' management has hit breaking point after a woeful beginning to the season, leaving United dangerously positioned near the relegation zone.

Though Tuesday's stirring fightback against Roma offered brief respite, the Champions League fixture was momentarily stopped due to supporter demonstrations, with tennis balls thrown onto the playing surface. As calls intensify for ownership changes at Old Trafford, ex-Premier League forward Djibril Cisse has floated Beckham as a potential replacement for Sir Jim Ratcliffe's operation.

The French striker believes the United icon's success as co-owner of Inter Miami proves he possesses the capability to rescue the club from its present crisis. The former Liverpool and Sunderland player told Mr Gamble: "Could David Beckham replace the Glazers and INEOS at Manchester United? Why not?". "He's doing a good job at Inter Miami. He has an aura, he has a name, he's David Beckham, and he carries real weight in world football. So yes, why not?".

Were he to assume control, the 45-year-old Cisse suggests Beckham ought to install fellow club legend Keane as boss, notwithstanding the Sky Sports pundit's 15-year absence from management.

Cisse, who played under Keane at Sunderland, continued: "It would be another club legend coming back. If it were him and Roy Keane, that would be amazing. Keane has the weight of experience and history. He is a strong personality and he's an icon of the club.

"He wore the armband for so many years during United's glory days, so bringing him back would be a really good thing.

"I really enjoyed working with him because he didn't judge me on what he'd heard or what people might say about my character. He trusted me, it worked very well, and I was very disappointed when he left.

"He's a coach I loved working with and whom I respect enormously. We're quite similar. We're honest, we say things straight, and once it's said, we move on. We're all in.

"When I do something, I do it properly. When I say something, I mean it. He's like that too, and I really, really enjoyed my time with him."

Beckham's involvement in a potential ownership role seems more likely than Keane's return to Old Trafford in a managerial position, reports the Mirror. While the Irishman hasn't entirely dismissed the possibility of returning to management someday, he suggests it remains improbable.
