England handed fresh injury blow as Northampton star limps off

England have suffered another injury scare after Alex Mitchell limped off during Northampton's 28-14 win over Gloucester.

The scrum-half lasted just 20 minutes before leaving the field with a suspected hamstring injury.

Mitchell appeared in pain after chasing back to cover a loose ball. Jake Weimann replaced him.

It is another worry for England boss Steve Borthwick ahead of next Sunday's clash with Australia.

The full extent of the injury is not yet known.

However, Mitchell has already had several hamstring problems this year. England will be hoping this is nothing serious.

Northampton fight back to beat Gloucester

Saints had to work hard for their 28-14 win at Franklin's Gardens.

Gloucester made a flying start and raced into a 14-0 lead.

Max Llewellyn and Will Joseph both crossed for the visitors.

But Northampton hit back.

Tom Pearson scored their first try before Curtis Langdon brought the scores level.

The home side then took charge after half-time.

George Hendy crossed to put Saints ahead before Rory Hutchinson sealed the win.

Four unanswered tries earned Northampton a bonus point and moved them into third place in the PREM Rugby table.

However, Mitchell's injury was a major concern.

More injury worries for England

Mitchell is not the only Northampton player on England's injury list.

Fly-half Fin Smith missed the Gloucester game with a calf problem.

That leaves Borthwick sweating on two key players ahead of the Autumn Internationals.

If Mitchell misses out, Leicester Tigers scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet could get his chance.

Ben Spencer and Harry Randall are other possible options.

England face Australia at Twickenham on Sunday, November 8.

Games against Japan and New Zealand will follow.

With several players already battling fitness problems, England's growing injury concerns could make Borthwick's selection decisions even harder.

Mitchell will now face further checks, with England hoping for good news before their opening match.
