One coach has already publicly thrown his name into the mix for Maryland football's vacant head coaching job.
Former Michigan interim coach and Maryland native Biff Poggi told the Baltimore Sun he'd like a shot at turning the Terrapins' program around.
"Yeah, I really would like the job," Poggi told Sun reporter Michael Howes.
Maryland "mutually parted ways" with Mike Locksley amidst a five-game losing streak, culminating in a blown lead to fellow Big Ten cellar dweller Rutgers. Locksley went 39–54 overall in College Park, which includes six games as an interim coach in 2015 and his hiring full time before the 2019. He compiled 17-52 mark in the Big Ten, along with three bowl game victories.
"It's actually not hard to win at Maryland," Locksley told ESPN days after his firing. "It's hard to win consistently at Maryland."
"Don't think you can think, 'Hey, we're just going to hire a new coach, and everything is going to be better," Poggi told the Sun. "There have been plenty of coaches there that haven't won."
Poggi, 66, built Maryland high schools Gilman (1996-2015) and St. Frances Academy (2017-2020) into powerhouses before trying his luck as a college head coach at Charlotte, where he was 6-16 over two seasons. Poggi had three stints on Michigan's staff, first under Jim Harbaugh, and then Sherrone Moore, who he took over for on an interim basis after Moore was fired following an investigation into an improper relationship with a staffer and his subsequent arrest.
Poggi went 2-1 as Wolverines interim coach, which included a 41-27 Citrus Bowl loss to Texas. Now an analyst on the Big Ten Network, he said, "It would be one of the great honors my lifetime," if he were to be hired at Maryland.
"If Indiana can win, we can win."
