Lewis Hamilton risks Ferrari sacking as no F1 star is bigger than Maranello

F1 is back with the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday and the spotlight will be on the Ferrari civil war.

To recap briefly, as you are pretty much aware by now, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were so intent on beating each other at the Mexican Grand Prix last week that they completely forgot about the race track, ran off line, and allowed Max Verstappen to slip past to take an unexpected win and deny Ferrari a one-two finish that looked certain after turn three on lap one.

Post-race, Hamilton and Leclerc were both widely and heavily criticised for putting themselves before Ferrari.

Luckily for them, this happened to be the same race where Kimi Antonelli became Italy's first world champion in 73 years. Therefore the Italian media especially had their eyes elsewhere away from the latest Maranello calamity.

But that focus will naturally fade away, the same can't be said for the Ferrari story that with seemingly each race has a fresh take to the bitter rivalry developing between Hamilton and Leclerc.

Team Lewis Hamilton

Not helping matters is Hamilton himself, whose contradictory messages in Mexico about wanting what's best for the team and then calling for his team-mate to get a penalty during the race are helping no one.

In fact, it's the seven-time world champion who seems to be stirring the pot and bringing more negative attention to the team as he has continued to do at Interlagos this weekend.

Hamilton spent the first half of the race in Mexico moaning on the radio about his turn four incident, that he himself was partly to blame.

Following the red flag for Valtteri Bottas's crash he said over the radio something he knew would be broadcasted to the world in 'we've got big, big problems', which has no benefit to being messaged inside the car aside from trying to build a personal narrative.

To add a visual aid to his anger, he then let his micro-scooter crash on to the floor in front of the Ferrari garage, forcing his close assistant Angela Cullen to have to pick it up.

For all this rage, it has to be noted that if Hamilton just takes turn four properly and doesn't run off track, regardless of what Leclerc does, he wins the race.

This is all 'Hollywood', and it's a term something his former team-mate at Mercedes Nico Rosberg has coined when referring to how Hamilton acts when he wants to control the narrative. The seven-time world champion has done it all his career too, including at McLaren with Fernando Alonso.

The kicker here is I don't actually blame Hamilton for acting like this. He has already said he won't be silenced and If he wants to be all out for himself, then that's his agency, but trying to hide behind playing a team game though is just sneaky.

Hamilton's strategy not favoured by Ferrari

This time though it's a risky game. At McLaren where he was the apple in team boss Ron Dennis's eye, it was easy to get his way. At Mercedes, where he had the slight edge on Rosberg and total domination of Bottas, the team was his to control, Ferrari though is a different story.

His level is about on par with Charles Leclerc, and as Max Verstappen said recently, he isn't getting quicker referring to the 41 years he has on the clock.

Leclerc has also smartly signed a new deal with Ferrari until 2030, and is in his eighth season with the team. Not only is he quick, he is very popular inside the team and has always treated them with respect.

Hamilton is on big money and a much shorter contract with no more potential to extract. He doesn't have the leverage to start creating drama in a way that it drives the team towards him.

The biggest issue for Hamilton though is Ferrari itself. If there is one team that has always despised drivers thinking they are the bigger than the team it's them.

Big F1 stars have lost politics war at Ferrari

Four-time world champion Alain Prost pretty much moaned his way through the 1991 season and before the final race was sacked by the team.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was more keen on signing Kimi Raikkonen for 2007 than trying to convince the proven winner Michael Schumacher to stay on, while Fernando Alonso's game of chicken with Ferrari in 2014 resulted in them losing patience and just signing Sebastian Vettel instead.

Playing internal politics is a massive gamble at a team like Ferrari and if you don't have the influence even more so.

Hamilton is walking a thin line between wrestling the team away from Leclerc or simply being disposed of as a nuisance within the next year.

I've been a massive F1 fan since the mid 1990s and continue to study the history of the sport long before that. As an experienced motor sport reporter covering F1, MotoGP and the LeMans 24 Hour race, being part of GPFans has allowed me to work with a diverse team with all sorts of different backgrounds in watching the sport and given me a greater appreciation of F1.
