Sunderland will host Brentford on Wednesday night as they look to book their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals. Regis Le Bris is expected to make several changes to his starting line-up as the Black Cats balance three competitions.
Sunderland have made an encouraging start to their Europa League campaign but sit bottom of the Premier League table after eight games. Although the EFL Cup is unlikely to be a priority, a cup run would still be a welcome bonus for Le Bris and his players.
TalkingPoints
One HAS to be sold in January… who you picking?
Melker Ellborg should start between the sticks after keeping a clean sheet in Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over Hull City in the previous round. Trai Hume is expected to play at right-back, with Nordi Mukiele suffering a facial injury against Leeds and Thomas Meunier not yet fully fit.
Kevin Danso and Omar Alderete could form the centre-back pairing, allowing 31-year-old Luke O’Nien to rest after starting on Sunday. Summer signing Dayann Methalie is also likely to feature at left-back, with Reinildo potentially given a break after his recent involvement.
Jules Ahoka and Habib Diarra could start in central midfield as Le Bris looks to rotate his options for the cup tie. Diarra, in particular, needs minutes after returning from a hamstring injury, while Ahoka would have another opportunity to impress.
Enzo Le Fee should operate in attacking midfield, with Malick Fofana and Chemsdine Talbi providing width on either side. Brian Brobbey is expected to lead the line after playing 65 minutes against Leeds. The Dutchman could again be withdrawn around that point as Le Bris manages his workload.
