Islam Makhachev has fired back at Carlos Prates after he called him a 'coward' following the huge UFC 336 announcement.
During the official broadcast of Saturday's UFC 333 from Abu Dhabi, where Alexander Volkanovski stopped Movsar Evloev, the promotion announced two huge title fights for January. The UFC revealed they will be returning to Canada on January 30 with a championship double-header.
In the main-event, Joshua Van will defend his UFC flyweight title against Manel Kape, while the interim UFC welterweight title will be on the line as Prates and Michael Morales meet in the co-feature.
The original plan was for Makhachev to defend his 170lbs championship against Prates, but he couldn't compete at UFC 336, prompting the UFC to create an interim belt.
UFC commentator Jon Anik explained that Makhachev recently informed his bosses that he would not be ready to fight in early 2027.
Prates is on a three-fight winning streak and had hoped his latest victory over Jack Della Maddalena would have been enough to earn him a shot against Makhachev.
While he will challenge for UFC gold in his next bout, it won't be against the Dagestan superstar.
He questioned the UFC champion's decision to postpone their UFC 336 showdown, branding him a 'coward' in the process.
"@islam_makhachev I’ve been working for my dream to be a champion at 17 years old, and now you postponed it," he wrote on Instagram. "I’m number 1, I knocked out two former champions, while Morales only beat Sean Brady.
"You told UFC you won’t be ready to fight in 3 months. Bro, you don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t party and can’t you prepare for a fight in three months?
"Let me show you how it’s done. On January 30, I’m going to knock Michael Morales out, and then I’ll come back to retire you, coward!"
Makhachev caught wind of Prates' dig and issued a swift response to the Brazilian, who has been pursuing a fight since his win over Della Maddalena in May.
"I just beat the guy who chased you around the Octagon for five rounds. Shut up and go train. You’re not on my level. See you soon, maybe," he posted on X, referring to his recent victory over Ian Garry, who beat 'The Nightmare' in 2025.
The 34-year-old Russian was active on social media last night as he also made his feelings clear on Prates vs Morales.
Before the UFC announced the interim title bout, he said: "Carlos Morales January. Too much contenders," and in another post, added: "We have to know who is better who deserve."
Makhachev will observe Ramadan in February 2027, but will be back in action once UFC 336 produces a 'real contender'.
On X, he wrote: "As soon as we find out who the real contender is, we’ll be right back!!!"
