Jason Demetriou aims dig at RFL and ‘English clubs’ over Super League future amid Gairo Voro update

Papua New Guinea head coach Jason Demetriou has fielded questions on his London Broncos and national team star player Gairo Voro, highlighting uncertainty over his future as being driven by the ‘English clubs’ and RFL’s slow process over determining if the Broncos will be in Super League next year.

It’s been reported recently that Voro, who was the Championship Player of the Year in 2026, could return down under and play for the PNG Hunters in the Queensland Cup ahead of his 2028 switch to the PNG Chiefs when they enter the NRL.

Demetriou, who coaches Voro at both club and international level, spoke after the Kumuls lost 34-12 to England with Voro getting himself on the scoresheet in the game.

Asked where his star half’s future lies, Demetriou said:”In London, I hope. That’s the plan and that’s where we want him.

“Obviously, there’s been some delays in that purely because the RFL and English clubs are doing a great job at making this the most drawn-out process that I’ve ever seen but hopefully, we get in there.”

Gairo Voro will ‘100%’ leave London Broncos if they’re not in Super League

Despite the IMG gradings coming out over two weeks ago, there has been no confirmation if London are in or out of Super League for 2027. It’s been reported that the NRL, who are looking to invest in Super League, want the capital club in the competition, though it remains unconfirmed and that’s playing into the uncertainty over Voro’s future.

On those reports, Demetriou said: “There’s been a lot of talk about Gairo coming back to play for the (PNG) Hunters but in my personal opinion, I think that would be a step back for him.

“I think it’s best for his footy and his development as a player and a person would be for him to go back to London and I’ve had that conversation with him but I’ll support whatever he wants to do.”

Demetriou went on to argue his belief that Voro would ‘100%’ leave London should the Broncos not be admitted to Super League, stating:  “I think if we weren’t playing Super League then 100%, he’d go back and play in the feeder system for the Chiefs but playing in Super League would be another step up for him consistently week in week out.”

Outlining another reason why he thinks Voro should remain with the Broncos, he said: “Also, getting to work on his English and his comms and being out of his comfort zone, I think if he goes back then he’d go back into the PNG-style of comms and it’s not going to help him when the Chiefs come in. That’s my thoughts, he knows where I’m at but I’ve got a lot of time for him and I’ll support whatever he wants to do.”

Voro is one of three London players to have signed with the PNG Chiefs on development contracts with Finley Glare and Morea Morea the other two players.
