With District 4-5A play completed and an eighth straight championship in hand, the Catholic High Bears stepped away from district play Friday night and kept their late-season momentum going in a big way.

The Bears rolled up 400 yards of offense and returned a kickoff for a score in a 49-13 domination of the Legacy School of Sports Sciences (Texas) at Memorial Stadium.

After losing three of four games to start the season, Catholic (7-3) finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak.

The Bears scored more than 40 points for the fifth straight game, in which they are averaging 52.8 points per contest.

“It is the first game of November and for us, we always want to play our best in November and December,” Catholic coach Hudson Fuller said. “Tonight was a good first step in that direction. I am proud of how our guys handled the challenge and of the young guys that also stepped up.”

Jayden Miles needed only nine carries to collect 139 yards, and his four scores gave him 54 career rushing touchdowns, breaking the Catholic record of 52 set by Travis Minor.

Quarterback Camden Estep also had a big night, completing 12 of 14 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Julian Shepherd led Legacy (1-8) with 126 yards rushing.

Catholic piled up 336 yards in the first half and scored on six of seven drives to build a 42-13 halftime lead.

Miles scored on runs of 1, 35, 53 and 18 yards, and he rushed for 137 yards in the half. Estep also found Jaden Moffitt wide open for a 38-yard score.

“Coach (Fuller) told us all week to come out with a winning mindset,” Miles said. “Just come out and dominate early, and that is what we did.”

The Bears led 28-0 early in the second quarter, but Legacy scored consecutive touchdowns on an 80-yard run by Shepherd and a 36-yard fumble return by Eli Kelly to cut the deficit to 28-13 with 6:16 remaining in the half.

That momentum was short-lived as Jude Chamberlain returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to put Catholic up 35-13 and effectively end any hope of a comeback for the Titans.

The Bears scored on the opening drive of the second half on a 28-yard pass from Estep to Hudson Girouard to make the score 49-13. The remainder of the game was played with a running clock.

Breaking Minor’s record is special for Miles, who is following in Minor’s footsteps by committing to play collegiately at Florida State, where Minor starred from 1997-2000.

“It is a blessing and incredible to be compared to him and break his record,” Miles said. “I thank my coaches and teammates for trusting me all these years.”

Catholic likely will have a bye for the first round of the playoffs, which begins next week. Fuller said his message to the team during the time off will is simple.

“We have got to continue to improve, and mainly stay hungry,” he said.
