Chelsea weren't awarded a first half penalty after VAR ruled that Luke O'Nien had challenged Cole Palmer outside the area.
Palmer was left incensed when referee Jarred Gillett waved away his claims for a penalty midway through the first half, with the score still 0-0 at the time. Replays appeared to show that O'Nien had fouled the Chelsea playmaker but because VAR ruled that there was no offence inside the box, it could not intervene.
Sunderland took the lead from the penalty spot shortly afterwards when Levi Colwill challenged Brian Brobbey in the box. Despite Chelsea's protestations that Brobbey was also holding Colwill's shirt in the duel, VAR agreed with Gillett's decision. After the check, Colwill was shown a yellow card for the foul.

The Premier League match centre posted of the Palmer incident: "The referee’s call of no penalty to Chelsea was checked and confirmed by VAR. VAR: “Confirming the on-field decision of play on, any contact with Palmer occurs outside the penalty area.”
Sunderland went on to win 1-0 and climb off the foot of the Premier League table.
