Devenish GAA legend Sean Michael O’Brien dies aged 63

The hugely popular father-of-three was 63.

And if the community is in shock then Devenish GAA club is in deep mourning for one of its true legends.

Sean Michael was an outstanding defender and captained the Devenish senior football to a Fermanagh League and championship double in 1989.

He won four county championships and four league titles in a star studded career along with his younger brother Barts.

Sean Michael and Barts worked all over Fermanagh and across as carpentry contractors and were renowned as excellent tradesmen and are highly respected.

Both were great servants of the local club and Sean Michael collected money at the gate in St Mary’s Park for almost a quarter of a century-taking over from his late father Michael Joe O’Brien, who was a club President.

Sean Michael was a real leader in the club and was a very witty man who enjoyed all aspects of the GAA and he will be greatly missed.

Apart from his brother Barts, his sister Mary was club treasurer for many years when the club was going through major development.

He is the second member of the great Devenish team of 1985-1997 to pass away as Paul Coyle passed away in June 2024.

Sean Michael is predeceased by his parents Cecilia and Michael Joe. Forever loved and missed by his beloved wife Rosaleen  his dear sons Marc (Shannon), Aaron (Amy), and Lorcan (Eve), his loving sister and brother Mary and Barts, his dear aunt Susan O'Brien , his dearest grandson Dáithí and all in the extended  O' Brien and Gallagher families.

Remains will repose at the family home on Friday from noon.

His funeral will take place in Mary, Queen of Peace Church, Garrison on Saturday for 11am Funeral Mass followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

A statement from Devenish St. Michael's said: "A dark cloud hangs over our Club & Community, and our hearts are filled with sadness on the passing of Sean Michael.

"He was a True Blue who played at all levels with pride and distinction, his proudest day undoubtedly being captain of our senior championship winning team in 1989.

"For the last 25 years he has been our lead Gate person, a role he took over from his Dad Michael Joe. He remained a passionate supporter and we will remember him with great fondness.

"Our thoughts and prayers are especially with his wife Rosaleen, his sons, Marc (Shannon), Aaron (Amy), & Lorcan (Eve), and of course two of our greatest Club stalwarts, his brother Bart and sister Mary."
