Three Bay Area radio hosts had a priceless on-air reaction to the Seattle Seahawks trade with the Indianapolis Colts for All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson. Watch below, then let’s discuss why those who follow and cover the San Francisco 49ers are panicking.
Host Bonta Hill reads, “We’ve got breaking news, guys,” to his two co-hosts, who exclaim “What? No!” before questioning why the 49ers weren’t in on Nelson’s market. Hill has a more measured reaction and settles his co-hosts down so he can say:
“Listen, [Seattle is] not done either. They’re not done either… They’re not going away… they’re trying to reload and go back-to-back because this thing is wide open and the niners, I was just about to talk about this stretch [they have coming up]: Raiders, Cowboys, Vikings, Seahawks. That could flip the whole damn NFC on top of its head right now.
So I expect John Lynch to continue to make calls. I need [DeForest] Buckner. I need Brian Thomas Jr. I need all hands on deck.”
Just 72 hours ago, the 49ers were 6-0 while the Seahawks were 3-3. The 49ers had yet to see their weaknesses exposed. The Seahawks came out of the most brutal five-day stretch of any team in the NFL this season, losing to the 49ers and the Denver Broncos in that span. Now, the Seahawks are two games behind the 49ers in the NFC West, fired up after a shellacking of the AFC favorite on national television, and just acquired the best guard in football.
Hill is right. The 49ers are worried because they haven’t been tested the same way. They’ve dealt with injuries, but they have yet to enter their most brutal stretch of scheduling. They’re worried about what might happen when they have to face a Murderers’ Row.
The Seahawks have been through the fire. They’ll continue to play massive games against top teams with the Chicago Bears visiting on Monday Night Football, but they’ve already faced the league’s best. They have the best interior offensive and defensive lines. Seattle is becoming the abyss where other great NFL teams lose hope.
