RALEIGH, N.C. — Nate Sheppard now owns the Duke football single-season rushing touchdown record.
Sheppard's 15th touchdown of the year came on the fourth play on the Blue Devils' opening drive against NC State on Saturday, Nov. 7. The sophomore running back broke loose for a 69-yard score to give Duke the early 7-0 lead.
Duke converted the third-and-10 with a Walker Eget pass to Jonah Burton before Sheppard was able to break loose.
Prior to Saturday, Sheppard's 14 touchdowns were tied with Brandon Connette (2013) and Winston Siegfried (1941).
It also put Sheppard over 1,000 yards on the season, making him the second Blue Devil with two 1,000-yard seasons alongside Randy Cuthbert (1989, 1992). Sheppard is the eighth Blue Devil to have a 1,000-yard season.
The 69-yard rush also marked the longest run and longest touchdown run of Sheppard's Duke career.
