Exeter City home form vital as opponents need to 'dread' coming to St James Park

"You want to create an environment that clubs come to and think, 'Oh, I'm not sure I fancy this.' And they won't, because our fans are so loud."

Exeter City need to keep making St James Park a fortress and a place where visiting teams dread coming to, attacker Anthony Scully has said.

The Grecians are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions at their home this season, and in the six outings in League Two, they have conceded just a single goal. Dating back to last season, it is just one loss in 12 at home.

The latest triumph on Tuesday night saw City end Crewe Alexandra's unbeaten start to the season with Scully getting his second goal in two games at home, this time from the penalty spot, before Reece Cole sealed the win in stoppage-time. And reflecting on Exeter’s win under the SJP lights, the forward praised both the attacking spark and defensive grit that have led to Matt Taylor's men rising up the table to now sit just a point off the play-offs.

"I thought especially that first half, we were a different class," Scully said. "We were electric at times in terms of looking like we could score at any moment. It was attack after attack. Had we gone in three or four nil, I don't think that would have been unfair.

"The back four and Jack in goal, I’ve not seen anything like it in terms of how well they defend together or how good they are, and that gives us confidence up the pitch. Even at 1–0 in the last 15 minutes, you just felt confident that we were still going to see it out, and that's a credit to the boys."

While the Grecians have only one once away from home this season, and picked up just four points from six games, at home it is three wins and three draws with just a single goal conceded, and the home form has seen them pull away from the lower reaches of the division and towards the top.

"You want to create an environment that clubs come to and think, 'Oh, I'm not sure I fancy this.' And they won't, because our fans are so loud," Scully said.

"At the same time, I think it's even more important that we create an environment where we love it. You want to go to your home stadium and really enjoy it, because that’s where you get the best performances. You can see how we celebrate as a group with the fans over at the Big Bank after a win. We love it, and as long as we keep enjoying playing there, the results will take care of themselves."

"Our home form has been been strong even back to the Bristol City game in pre-season," manager Taylor added. "We've been in the games and we've looked a strong home team and our form would suggest that and back that up as well.

"We know there's more to come at times, we'll get not found out, but opposition teams will hurt us. A lot of times it's been even midway through the games, but we're looking forward to playing in front of our fans again and looking forward to playing on our home surface our home ground.

"Our building for home games is a lot simpler. Everyone knows the travel involved. The ones who go and watch us away from home know the sacrifices they make in terms of the distance they they have to travel, but you know, we're going to have to perform again. And if we put out a performance similar to last night and hopefully add a little bit more to it, there's no reason why we can't come out on top."

Up next for the Grecians is Fleetwood Town at home on Saturday with the Cods coming to Devon off the back of a 4-2 defeat to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday which left them down in 18th place with just 14 points from 12 games and just one win in the last seven. And with games coming thick and fast, Scully added that the players are keen to get back out on the pitch and continue their good run they are on.

"If you ask me whether I want to play on a Tuesday night or train, you want to play a game, don't you?," the Irishman said. "I really enjoy the Saturday-Tuesdays. When you're in the position we're in, at home, coming off a win, and five games unbeaten, you just want to keep playing no matter who the opposition is.

"Fleetwood will have completely different strengths to Crewe, so it’ll be a different game. But the one thing about us this season is that we've played against different styles and stood up to it, whether against sides like Rotherham and Shrewsbury or Crewe. We’ve shown that no matter what opposition we face, we can impose our game and get results."
