Kevin Pietersen has finally cleared the confusion surrounding his new role with the England National Cricket Team. After facing heavy backlash from fans and media about his availability, Kevin Pietersen has explained that he is not a full-time member of the coaching staff.
The former England batter has returned to the national coaching setup as a specialist consultant and white-ball mentor. He will work alongside head coach Brendon McCullum as England prepare for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. However, his new role has already attracted plenty of criticism. Earlier, James Anderson reveals emotional struggle after Lancashire snub.
The controversy grew after Kevin Pietersen signed a surprising endorsement deal with online betting company Dafabet this month soon after his appointment. The England and Wales Cricket Board (EC) has strict rules against players, coaches, and support staff having links with gambling companies.
This raised questions about Pietersen's business deal along with his position. Some fans and critics also accused the former cricketer of giving more importance to personal business interests than the standards expected from someone working with the England national cricket team.
Although Pietersen assured the ECB that he would not promote the betting company while carrying out his official England duties. Many have also questioned Pietersen’s limited coaching experience and his earlier criticism of the team's training methods.
But his work schedule has also become a talking point. Critics believe his 150-day schedule, along with media work and brand commitments around the world, could make it difficult for him to give enough time to the England cricket team.
Critics have also questioned how Pietersen can help improve discipline and training standards when he will only work with the team part-time. Many have even described his appointment as more of a celebrity role than a full-time coaching job. Amid this, S Badrinath fires back at English media over Harry Brook, calls Abhishek Sharma No.1.
Following the growing criticism, Pietersen took to X to explain his exact responsibilities. He made it clear that he is an external consultant, not a full-time employee, and will not be present with the white-ball team for every match over the next 12 months.
Pietersen also confirmed that he is excited to travel to Australia for a few weeks and spend time with the England squad. With his clarification, he has now made it clear that his role will involve working with the team at selected times rather than being part of the setup for every game.
He posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Just need to clear something up once and for all. I am a consultant to the England cricket team. I am not a full-time employee. So, I WILL NOT be with the white-ball team all the time and for EVERY game they play over the next 12 months. Excited to travel to Aus for a few weeks to be with the team on Monday! Hope that clears things up once and for all!”
