Blackburn Rovers boss Mowbray on Wrexham test and free week

Rovers returned from the international break with three games in eight days, initially recording back-to-back wins against Cardiff City and Bristol City.

However, Mowbray’s men were unable to complete a perfect week at West Brom, letting a two-goal lead slip to leave empty handed.

The head coach admitted it is good to have a full week to prepare before hosting Wrexham, who will be buoyed by a big win against Preston North End.

“I think everybody benefits from a gasp of air,” he said. “It feels like on the back of the international break, it’s been a long week, especially with two long travels for us.

“Overnight stays, one of them midweek, and they're long, long days when you wake up at 8 o'clock and you're not playing until half past seven, quarter to eight in the night.

“If anything, it can make you lethargic. It's sitting around, waiting about, so it felt like a really long week. We'd hoped to try and finish it off well.

“It didn't materialise, but they still put a lot of good work in and we've given them the balance between rest and work during the week, and see how we get on against Wrexham next weekend.

“They won 4-1 (on Saturday), they will come with a spring in their step. They have spent a lot of money and they’re a big, physical threat. We will be ready for that and prepare this week.”

Last weekend’s return to the Hawthorns didn’t go as Mowbray, who had two spells in charge of the Baggies, would have hoped.

Rovers had a dream start thanks to Andri Gudjohnsen’s, brace but the hosts hit back to turn the contest on its head and take the points.

Mowbray received a warm welcome from his former club and though he has fond memories from his time there, the main reaction at full time was disappointment with how the game panned out.

“I don't sit here and think of any great emotion really. It was my job to bring Blackburn here and try and get a win. This football club will always be in my heart,” he added.

“I had some really good times here, and it was the journey in my managerial career, having started in Scotland at Aberdeen and then to come here and have relative success.

“I'm not overly emotional about clubs I've managed or clubs I've played for. Boro’s always the first result I look for, West Brom's probably the second I look for - not overly emotional.

“I wanted us to win and we didn't, but I'm pleased for James (Morrison), of course, a player I signed. It's amazing that he's still here all this time and has obviously become a legend at the club.

“Pleased for James, but obviously not pleased for myself or us because we gave ourselves a great chance to win a game and let it slip through our fingers.”
