Scoring a century in One Day International (ODI) cricket is a significant milestone for any batter. The format demands a combination of solid technique, smart shot selection and the ability to accelerate when required. While several legendary cricketers have built impressive records with numerous hundreds, others have enjoyed remarkable careers without ever reaching three figures in an ODI innings.

Interestingly, some players have accumulated thousands of runs in the 50-over format despite never registering a century. From dependable middle-order batters to explosive all-rounders, these cricketers have contributed to their teams in different ways. Some consistently delivered under pressure, while others came agonisingly close to the milestone but fell short. Let’s have a look at such well-known cricketers who never scored an ODI century.

5 famous players who never scored an ODI ton

1. Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan)

ODI career: 162 matches | 5,122 runs | 42 fifties | Highest score: 96*

Misbah-ul-Haq holds a unique place in ODI cricket history. The former Pakistan captain amassed more than 5,000 runs in the format without scoring a single century, making his record particularly unusual for a batter with such an impressive career tally.

Renowned for his composure and reliability, Misbah frequently played the role of a stabilising force in Pakistan’s middle order. He was often tasked with rebuilding the innings after early wickets and guiding the team through challenging situations. His 42 half-centuries demonstrated his consistency, even though he could not convert any of them into a hundred.

One of his closest opportunities came against the West Indies in 2013, when he remained unbeaten on 96. Despite missing out on the landmark, Misbah’s contributions as a batter and leader made him an important figure in Pakistan cricket.

2. Ravindra Jadeja (India)

ODI career: 212 matches | 2,905 runs | 13 fifties | Highest score: 87

Ravindra Jadeja has established himself as one of India’s most valuable all-rounders, combining left-arm spin, athletic fielding and useful contributions with the bat. Throughout his international career, he has frequently played a crucial role in rescuing India from difficult positions.

In ODIs, Jadeja has registered 13 half-centuries, with his highest score standing at 87. His batting position, usually in the lower middle order, has often required him to prioritise quick runs rather than spend extended periods building an innings.

As a result, opportunities to bat long enough for an ODI hundred have been limited. However, his importance to the Indian team extends well beyond individual batting milestones, with his bowling and fielding making him a valuable contributor in all three departments.

3. Michael Vaughan (England)

ODI career: 86 matches | 1,982 runs | 16 fifties | Highest score: 90*

Michael Vaughan is remembered for his elegant batting and leadership, particularly for captaining England to their memorable Ashes triumph in 2005. Although he enjoyed considerable success in Test cricket, where he scored 18 centuries, he never managed to reach three figures in ODIs.

Vaughan generally batted in the top order, giving him opportunities to play substantial innings. He accumulated 16 ODI half-centuries during his career, demonstrating his ability to make useful contributions in the limited-overs format.

However, converting those starts into centuries proved elusive. His highest ODI score was 90 not out, leaving him just 10 runs short of the landmark. Despite this missing achievement, Vaughan remains a prominent name in discussions about England’s successful cricket captains.

4. Hardik Pandya (India)

ODI career: 94 matches | 1,904 runs | 11 fifties | Highest score: 92*

Hardik Pandya has become one of India’s most dynamic white-ball all-rounders, known for his aggressive batting and ability to change the course of a match in a short period. His power-hitting has made him particularly valuable during the final overs of an ODI innings.

Pandya has scored 11 half-centuries in the format, with his best effort being an unbeaten 92 against Australia. That innings highlighted his ability to capitalise on the closing stages of a match, although an ODI century has remained beyond his reach.

His responsibilities as a finisher often require him to score quickly rather than construct a long innings. Furthermore, batting lower down the order can limit the number of deliveries available to reach three figures. As an active ODI cricketer, Pandya still has an opportunity to change this record, although his batting role and the opportunities presented by India’s strong top order could influence his chances.

5. Dinesh Karthik (India)

ODI career: 94 matches | 1,752 runs | 9 fifties | Highest score: 79

Dinesh Karthik enjoyed a long international career that required him to adapt to different roles and batting positions. His time in the Indian team coincided with the rise of several established players, including MS Dhoni, which made securing a regular place in the ODI side challenging.

Karthik was frequently moved around the batting order, sometimes featuring higher up and at other times being used as a lower-order option. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his role, he managed to score nine ODI half-centuries.

His highest score in the format was 79, and he never managed to turn one of his innings into a century. Although he demonstrated versatility and the ability to contribute in different situations, the elusive three-figure score remained missing from his ODI record.
