Four games into the 2026-27 regular season, the Oklahoma City Thunder are in emergency mode. Sam Presti delivered the apocalyptic news — Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace will both undergo surgery and be out for the indefinite future. With a solid chance of no return this year.

Wow. Just wow. On a single night, the Thunder went from a co-title favorite to just another contender. Losing two key starters in one game is a doomsday scenario. And there's no true way to convince yourself otherwise. No glass half-full here. This is about as bad as it gets.

Williams will have surgery for his fractured fibula and dislocated ankle. Wallace will have surgery for his torn labrum on his shoulder. The Thunder entered the year expecting big things out of both. Now, that's out the window. Can't control injuries. But OKC can control how it'll respond.

Where do the Thunder go from here? Now, they're a Frankenstein version of their previous selves. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are still an epic All-NBA duo. But the role players go from a luxury to a necessity. The good news is, OKC will have three months' worth of regular-season games to figure out their next move.

Standpat? Trade for help? Sell? All three are viable options. In his emergency press conference, Presti even entertained the idea of an old-school, nostalgia move. Could the Thunder talk Russell Westbrook out of NBA retirement for one last run?

"I haven't thought about anything relative to the roster spot. I understand the question," Presti said. "But all I'm really focused on right now is players, getting them the right support and then helping everybody with our group realize that we have a tremendous challenge in front of us. But this is what we do. It's also what we signed up for and it's what we represent."

Westbrook announced his NBA retirement this past offseason. He played a legendary 18 seasons. The first 11 were in OKC — where he became an all-time great and future Hall-of-Famer. Presti had already promised they'd honor his time there soon. But they don't sound thrilled with the idea of a movie-esque get-together. Even with OKC's vacant standard roster spot keeping it intriguing

Presti didn't necessarily shoot it down — but an impromptu Westbrook reunion isn't the type of move the Thunder usually make. Sure, it'll sell some tickets and bring you headlines. But in terms of basketball, the 37-year-old offers very little help. His best years are behind him. And he wouldn't replace what either Williams or Wallace brings to the table.

That said, Presti's mind isn't on roster moves. Only a day removed from a franchise-altering night, he was more about being there for Williams and Wallace. There will be time to be strategic in terms of salvaging the rest of the 2026-27 season. But for right now, the emotions are just too raw and powerful.

It's fair to say that the Thunder organization is in shock. Usually stoic and analytic, Williams' and Wallace's injuries have completely shaken up the high-win franchise, its fanbase and the NBA across the board. No offense, but Westbrook's return isn't even on the back of their mind.

"We have to come together and keep grinding, which I think we will do. I know we will do," Presti said. "Also, recognizing that those guys are going to be all right. I think sometimes we lose sight of that too."
