Cowboys stunned by Cardinals in OT, keeping Eagles in NFC East race

The Philadelphia Eagles received some unexpected help in the NFC East race Sunday afternoon when the Dallas Cowboys squandered a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter and suffered a stunning 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals at AT&T Stadium.

Dallas appeared to have momentum after defeating Philadelphia 38-21 on Monday night, but the Cowboys failed to build on that victory, dropping to 3-5 after allowing Arizona to erase a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. Chad Ryland kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime to complete the comeback, giving the Cardinals their third victory of the season and preventing Dallas from creating additional separation in the division standings.

The loss provided a favorable development for an Eagles team entering Sunday night's matchup against the Washington Commanders at 2-5 following five consecutive defeats. Philadelphia remains within reach of Dallas in the division standings and has an opportunity to gain ground before hosting the NFC East-leading New York Giants in Week 9.

Arizona running back Tyler Allgeier delivered one of the most explosive performances of the NFL season, rushing for 147 yards on 11 carries while repeatedly exposing a Dallas defense that had limited Philadelphia to 21 points six days earlier. Allgeier broke loose for runs of 63 and 52 yards, finishing with 96 rushing yards over expected, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. That represented the most by a Cardinals running back in a single game since the tracking metric became available in 2018.

The Cardinals also received a significant boost from quarterback Gardner Minshew, who replaced Jacoby Brissett during the third quarter and helped erase Dallas' advantage. Minshew threw three touchdown passes, including the tying score to Michael Wilson with six seconds remaining in regulation. Ryland missed the extra-point attempt that would have put Arizona ahead, but the Cardinals forced a Dallas punt in overtime before moving into position for the winning field goal.

Dallas struggled to contain Arizona's offense after controlling much of the first three quarters. The Cowboys entered the fourth quarter up 17-10 and eventually stretched the lead to 24-10 before the Cardinals mounted their comeback. The loss was particularly damaging because Dallas had a chance to improve to .500 and build on its convincing victory over Philadelphia.

Eagles have opportunity to gain ground before Giants matchup

The Cowboys' defeat creates another opening for Philadelphia in a division that remains unsettled despite the Eagles' disappointing start. Dallas is now 3-5, while the Giants entered Week 8 leading the NFC East at 4-2-1. Washington entered Sunday night's game against Philadelphia at 1-4-1, giving the Eagles a chance to earn an important divisional win while narrowing the gap with Dallas.

Philadelphia still has significant problems to address, including injuries at quarterback and running back, inconsistent offensive production, and a defense that has struggled to contain opposing rushing attacks. However, the Cowboys' inability to capitalize on their victory over the Eagles shows how quickly the standings can shift in the middle of the season.

The upcoming schedule also gives Philadelphia an opportunity to improve its position before the Week 10 bye. The Eagles face Washington on Sunday night before hosting the Giants on Nov. 8, creating two consecutive divisional matchups that could help determine whether the team can recover from its five-game losing streak.

Dallas still owns the head-to-head advantage after Monday's victory, and Philadelphia must begin winning games rather than relying on losses by division opponents. However, the Cardinals' comeback prevented the Cowboys from extending their lead over the Eagles and kept another potential path open in the NFC East race.

For a Philadelphia team seeking momentum after a difficult October, the Cowboys' stunning defeat was a welcome result. The Eagles now have to take advantage of that opportunity on the field, beginning with their Sunday night matchup against Washington.
