Salisbury lost 93-10 away to NC2 side Millbrook Women, but the score did not reflect their effort and spirit. Facing a team from the league above was always going to be tough.
Early injuries made the challenge tougher and forced major changes to the team. Several players took unfamiliar positions, including a second-row forward who moved into the centre. The backline was largely made up of novices, some in their first rugby season.
Six players made their women's-team debuts.
From the opening whistle, Salisbury battled strong winds and a well-organised Millbrook side that used the conditions to its advantage. Salisbury kept competing and working for one another throughout the afternoon. Injuries forced players to adapt quickly as the team faced sustained pressure. Despite the conditions, Salisbury kept its shape and attacked when chances came.

Salisbury's forwards were a bright spot. Salisbury's pack held its own at scrum and maul time against opposition from the higher division.
The set-piece showed Salisbury's NC3 side can match teams from the division above physically. It also gave the coaches clear lessons for the league campaign. The forwards kept working even as Millbrook's pace and experience opened gaps in open play. That effort kept Salisbury in the contest and showed the players where they could improve.
Amelia Desroches and Penelope Carr scored Salisbury's tries. Their tries gave the visitors something to celebrate. Millbrook led 43-10 at half-time, but soaked, tired Salisbury kept battling under pressure. The conditions and score did not stop Salisbury working. Their response showed the togetherness that has driven the team's development this season.
Millbrook's pace, experience and organisation proved decisive as the hosts added more tries after half-time. Salisbury fought until the final whistle despite the scoreline. The coaches praised the squad's commitment, adaptability and attitude. The cup experience will help prepare the team for league action. Next weekend, Salisbury face league leaders Basingstoke.
