Catch up on fall sports at Zachary Youth Park and other athletic action

Gordon "Pee-Wee" Leblanc provided an update on goings on “under the bright stadium lights of the Zachary Youth Park.”

"History was made," he said after the Alcoballics completed a "flawless" 10-0 regular season to officially capture the 2026 Zachary Fall Co-ed Softball League championship.

Leblanc said the Alcoballics, led by coach Iris Nettles, “ran the ultimate gauntlet, turning what began as a highly competitive autumn schedule into an absolute masterclass in adult community athletics."

The numbers tell the story. Over the course of a 10-game stretch, the team put on an offensive clinic while locking down a suffocating defense, outscoring their opponents by a staggering margin of 156 to 50.

"To go undefeated in a league with this much local talent and parity is incredibly rare," one spectator said who watched the finale from the Field 3 fences.

"They didn't just win games; they played complete, selfless softball from the first pitch of September to the final out this week," Leblanc said.

Leblanc noted that while rivals like the Happy Hour Heroes, Unhinged, BAD JUJU and the former reigning champion Pride Posse all brought fierce competition to fields 2, 3 and 4 at the park, none could find an answer for the Alcoballics' relentless bats and sharp fielding.

Leblanc is also pleased that in addition to the Alcoballics historic run that served as a vibrant showcase for the Zachary community, there were other important fall events managed by Reed Felder that made the park a hub for local goodwill like hosting an expansive 80-game benefit tournament for "Emma's Event" to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The senior men’s softball season is still in progress and we will visit the leaderboard next week.

Prelude to winter sports

As the weather starts to cool … some, winter sports are starting to kick into gear in Zachary.

The two-time nonselect state champion ZHS girls basketball team hosted the Referee Scrimmage on Halloween with Madison Prep, Mandeville and Prairieville. The similar two-time defending nonselect state champion boys team also competed in a scrimmage last week.

Wrestling coach Ben McHugh said that on Oct. 29, the Broncos hosted the ZHS showcase where 200-plus middle schoolers were touring the facilities and learning about programs.

The boys and girls wrestling teams start tournaments next month. The ZHS boys and girls soccer teams will also be kicking things off in November. The ZHS boys open with Ben Franklin at home on Saturday, Nov. 14, and the ZHS girls home opener is Tuesday, Nov. 10, against Parkview.

Though the first meet is not until 2027, the ZHS girls and boys indoor track field teams are in training for the short (five-meet) indoor season.

Broncos football set to close out the regular season

On Oct. 30, the Zachary High football team took on 5A powerhouse Destrehan in a nondistrict game that could be a prelude to the playoffs.

The Wildcats entered the game with a 7-1 record and a No. 3 power ranking to the Broncos No. 10 power ranking.

Coach David Brewerton said “it’s hard to fill out a 10-game schedule and they were a quality opponent with an open date.” At halftime, the family of longtime chain gang leader Buddy Baudoin was recognized and his over 40 years of service honored.

The Broncos pulled off the upset in a game Baudoin would have loved with a 31-21 victory.

Zachary will close out the regular season and district 4-5A play against Liberty at Olympia on Friday, Nov. 6. On Sunday, Nov. 8, the brackets come out and the road to the Caesars Superdome begins.
