Newcastle United's transfer policy questioned after successive defeats - 'must be frustrating'

Newcastle United's transfer policy 'must be frustrating' for supporters amid question marks over the club's change of direction in the market over the summer.

Sporting director Ross Wilson oversaw a revolution in the summer as the Magpies made eight first team signings, all of whom are aged 24 and under.

In the same window, Newcastle sold key players Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively, while Kieran Trippier left the club on a free transfer.

It was all part of a bold vision for the club that CEO David Hopkinson coined as 'Newcastle United 2.0' but a mixed start to the season has led to questions over the merits of such a bold transfer policy, particularly given it was still an expensive outlay in terms of the money they spent.

In their last defeat to Aston Villa, only Lukas Hornicek, Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo from those eight summer signings started the game.

Sean Steur and Amar Dedic were among the substiutes, while Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba and Ewen Jaouen are yet to make a Premier League start, and Waddle can understand why supporters have been left frustrated.

"The owners obviously needed to turn a profit in the summer and they’ve done that, but they lost three of their best players in the process," Waddle told Chronicle Live, on behalf of NetBet casino UK.

"They made some big signings last season as well. Last season was a disaster for Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa has been unfortunate with injuries and things just didn’t work out for Nick Woltemade for whatever reason.

"They were three big signings by Eddie Howe and it hasn’t happened for any of them.

"Jaissle has brought in a number of young players and the club obviously wants to go down the route of signing young players, eventually getting them into the first team and then selling them on for double the money in a few years. It must be frustrating for Newcastle fans."

The Magpies will look to get back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats to Coventry and Aston Villa, as they travel to Selhurst Park on Sunday to take on Crystal Palace.
