Texas A&M women's basketball entered the 2026-27 season looking for someone to step up offensively following the departures of its top two scorers. LSU transfer Kailyn Gilbert wasted little time showing head coach Joni Taylor that she could be the answer.

Gilbert delivered an impressive debut Monday night, recording a career-high 30 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the Aggies' 77-54 season-opening victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Reed Arena. The graduate guard shot 11-of-20 from the field and knocked down five 3-pointers, becoming the highest-scoring player in an Aggie debut since the 1999-2000 season.

Her performance was particularly encouraging considering Texas A&M lost Ny'Ceara Pryor and Fatmata Janneh, its two leading scorers from last season, to the transfer portal.

Gilbert arrived in College Station with plenty of experience. She began her career at Arizona, where she averaged 15.1 points per game as a sophomore, before spending two seasons at LSU and helping the Tigers reach the Elite Eight in 2025.

When Taylor announced Gilbert's addition in April, she praised the guard's proven scoring ability and SEC experience. Monday's performance offered an early glimpse of what the Aggies hoped to add. Gilbert also helped Texas A&M overcome some early-season inconsistencies, scoring 11 points in the third quarter before the Aggies pulled away in the fourth.

One game won't determine how the season unfolds, but Gilbert's debut offered an encouraging sign for a Texas A&M team looking to replace significant offensive production.
