England: Palmer snubbed as Jobe Bellingham and Fulham star King get first call-ups

England boss Thomas Tuchel once again leaves Cole Palmer out of his squad with Jobe Bellingham and Josh King getting their first call-ups.

The Three Lions head coach has picked his squad for the country’s final matches of 2026 with Nations League fixtures against Croatia at Wembley and Spain in Madrid.

Chelsea attacking midfielder Palmer has missed out on the England squad once again after not being selected in the squad for the World Cup over the summer.

Palmer was publicly criticised by Tuchel for withdrawing from a more recent squad as his commitment was questioned, and the German’s latest selection suggests Borussia Dortmund midfielder Bellingham, brother of Jude, is now ahead of the Chelsea star in the pecking order.

As well as Bellingham receiving his first call-up, Fulham’s Josh King has been handed a place in Tuchel’s squad for the first time after his good form.

However, there are question marks over Tuchel’s decision to snub Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in favour of King.

Liverpool Echo sports editor Paul Wheelock believes ex-Chelsea and Leicester City star Dewsbury-Hall deserved a place in the squad ahead of others.

Wheelock said: “You’ve got to feel for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. He has been in fantastic form in the lead up to this latest England squad announcement and, with Thomas Tuchel overlooking Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, you would have felt he had a real chance of winning his maiden call-up.

“Instead Tuchel kept faith with Eberechi Eze and selected two youngsters in Josh King of Fulham and Borussia Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham, brother of Jude.

“That will be a blow to Dewsbury-Hall, who must simply keep plugging away in the hope of forcing his way into the England manager’s thinking.

“Elsewhere, it was a given that Jordan Pickford would be called-up, and Jarrad Branthwaite clearly did enough at the last camp to convince Tuchel to retain his services. Rightly so, too. If Branthwaite stays fit, he can be a regular England starter for years to come.

“And it’s clear Tuchel rates Garner and his versatility. The midfielder has been playing catch up after a summer operation but he is getting back to his best and this should do his confidence the world of good. Only Arsenal have more players than Everton in this Three Lions squad.”
