Max Verstappen and a representative of the FIA are said to have discussed the bumpy track surface at the Circuit of the Americas. The Dutchman has been highly critical of it in recent days, with the former champion describing the surface as “unacceptable.”

Verstappen is known to be a big fan of the layout of the circuit in Texas, but has complained for years about the many bumps on the track. Speaking about the circuit during Thursday’s media day, he said: "You can use the excuse that the soil is the problem but then you should have known that and you need to make sure that you reinforce it more.

"I love this track, I love this place. It's one of the best layouts ever and it's one of the best venues, best city to be at. But for me the bumps are unacceptable," Verstappen said.

FIA explains Austin track problems to Verstappen

Max Verstappen’s criticism, along with that of other drivers, has apparently been heard by the FIA. Tim Malyon, the FIA’s sporting director, therefore attended the drivers’ meeting on Friday evening local time to explain why it is so difficult to get rid of the bumps.

It was apparently explained that the Circuit of the Americas was built on ground that is constantly shifting. As a result, not only do new bumps appear, but existing ones can also move. Resurfacing certain sections therefore does not always provide a lasting solution.

After the meeting, Verstappen had time to speak individually with Malyon and others. It is not known exactly what was discussed during that conversation.

COTA boss responds to Verstappen's bump criticism

Meanwhile, Circuit of the Americas owner Bobby Epstein has responded to Verstappen's complaints.

Having spoken to WEC drivers during their recent outing in Austin, Epstein insists the track is "in really good shape." The COTA boss did, however, highlight the sole exception of Turn 1, which he admitted has no quick fix.
