Ravens-Bengals: Four keys to Baltimore’s potential offensive rebound

Questions about the Baltimore Ravens' offensive consistency have lingered since Week 6 on the road against the Cleveland Browns. In today's NFL, ten points won't cut the mustard more often than not. That kind of offensive performance often leads to long flights home.

Week 7 has come in a flash, and Baltimore's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals offers little room for another extended stretch of stalled drives. That will only lead to another disappointing afternoon. The Ravens need to turn their offensive talent into consistent production before their struggles become an even bigger obstacle. When drives repeatedly come up empty, the defense is left carrying a burden that no unit can sustain indefinitely.

Baltimore has the personnel to produce far more consistently, but potential means little without execution. Against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Ravens must address the problems that undermined them in Cleveland and show their offense can hold up against a divisional opponent. Four factors could go a long way toward determining whether they respond.

Can Cam Jurgens recapture his Pro Bowl form?

The Ravens lost Tyler Linderbaum in free agency and then faced further uncertainty at center, making their decision to acquire Cam Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles a significant investment in the offensive line. Jurgens has practiced this week after clearing concussion protocol, potentially putting him in position to make his Baltimore debut against Cincinnati. His arrival gives the Ravens a chance to improve communication and stability at an unsettled position.

Baltimore sent Philadelphia a fifth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2028 draft to acquire the two-time Pro Bowler. However, Jurgens has not consistently looked like his usual self, raising questions about whether lingering physical issues have affected his performance. If he can approach his previous level, the Ravens could get a meaningful boost at center. If he continues to struggle, the front office may need to consider other long-term options at the position.

Sunday's matchup will offer an early indication of what Jurgens can provide, particularly against a defensive front that can test his strength, technique, and communication.

Can the interior offensive line win the trench battle?

Baltimore's guards have endured an uneven season, with John Simpson and Emery Jones Jr. experiencing both positive stretches and difficult assignments. Both were among Pro Football Focus' four lowest-graded Ravens offensive players in Week 6, underscoring the need for greater consistency against a Cincinnati front that can create interior pressure.

If Jurgens is ready to play, the expected alignment change would move Vega Ioane back to right guard, potentially giving the Ravens a more settled combination up front. That adjustment would matter most against Jonathan Allen and Dexter Lawrence, who have combined for 30 tackles, six sacks, 12 additional quarterback hits, and a forced fumble this season.

The battle inside will affect more than Baltimore's pass protection. If the guards cannot create movement at the line of scrimmage, Derrick Henry could find fewer opportunities to build momentum, leaving the offense in predictable passing situations. The Ravens need their interior linemen to hold up against Cincinnati's power and penetration so the offense can operate with more balance.

Can Zay Flowers solve the DJ Turner II and Dax Hill riddle?

Zay Flowers can change a game with his route-running and yards-after-catch potential, but Cincinnati's secondary has made life difficult for him in recent meetings. In two matchups last season, DJ Turner II and Dax Hill limited Flowers to five receptions for 74 yards. That includes a two-reception, six-yard performance in Week 13. The good news is that sample does not establish a lasting matchup problem, but it gives the Bengals a reason to test whether they can restrict Baltimore's most dynamic wide receiver again.

The Ravens should avoid becoming overly dependent on Flowers winning every serious passing situation. If Cincinnati dedicates coverage resources to him, Baltimore will need other targets to take advantage of the space that creates. Flowers can still play a central role, but moving him around the formation, creating opportunities for teammates, and finding balance could make it harder for the Bengals to dictate where the ball goes.

Can the Ravens win a quarterback duel with Joe Burrow?

Joe Burrow has shown that limiting his touchdown passes doesn't necessarily mean containing Cincinnati's offense. In two of the Bengals' first five games, he threw only one touchdown pass and at least one interception, yet he completed at least 71.4% of his attempts in both contests. In Week 4, he also threw for 428 yards in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars benefited from two interceptions in that game.

Burrow has three interceptions against 11 touchdown passes this season, but he has avoided turnovers in Cincinnati's other three games, all of which featured multiple touchdown passes from him. Those numbers illustrate why Baltimore cannot rely on forcing an occasional mistake or keeping Burrow out of the end zone. The Ravens must disrupt his rhythm and make it difficult for him to sustain drives.

Baltimore's offense also has to do its part to keep pace. The Ravens cannot afford the prolonged scoring droughts that have undermined their performances, especially if Burrow consistently moves the Bengals downfield. Lamar Jackson's return to practice offers hope, but regardless of who starts at quarterback, Baltimore needs to convert its possessions into points. A competitive quarterback matchup will require the Ravens to finish drives rather than leave their defense with little margin for error.
