Rory McIlroy has responded to Shane Lowry joining Boston Common Gold, marking the first transfer in TGL history. The Irishman has made the move from The Bay Golf Club. As part of the agreement, the club will receive Boston Common Golf’s fourth selection to fill its roster for this season, as well as one future selection across the next three seasons. There are also commercial considerations added to the deal.

The move will see him join up with McIlroy, who is a founder member of TGL, presented by SoFi, as well as Boston Common Golf.

The 2027 season will see TGL expand to teams having five-player rosters, with the full line-up expected to be announced in the coming days.

In a statement on the PGA Tour website, an ecstatic McIlroy said: “Shane is a great friend and someone I love having alongside me in team competition.

"We’ve had some special wins together, including at the Zurich Classic and I know the quality of his game and how much he cares about winning for his team-mates. I’m delighted to welcome him to Boston Common Golf and excited about what we can achieve together this season.”

Lowry also gave his reaction to the move. “I’m delighted to be joining Boston Common Golf,” he said. “Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting, and I’m looking forward to helping the team bring a championship to Boston.”

President of Boston Common Golf, Mark Lev added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Shane to Boston Common Golf and to make the first trade in TGL history with a player of his calibre.

"Shane is a major champion and a proven winner in team competition whose competitive spirit and personality will resonate with our fans. His energy and sense of humour will be a great fit for our locker room and the camaraderie this group already shares.

“His addition makes us a stronger team and reflects our ambition to bring a championship to Boston. We can’t wait to see him compete alongside this group in the season ahead.”

It’s not the first time that McIlroy and Lowry have teamed up, with the two winning the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The two have also represented Europe together in three Ryder Cups, winning the tournament in 2023 and 2025, and share a fanstatic relationship on and off the golf course.
