Lee Harland, a former professional rugby league forward known for his time with Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers, has died at the age of 53.
Beginning his career with Leeds, Harland later joined Halifax, where he played from 1993 to 1995. In 1995, he transferred to Castleford Tigers in an exchange deal involving Martin Ketteridge. Over nine seasons at Castleford, Harland made more than 200 appearances before continuing his career with spells at Doncaster, returning to Halifax, and finishing with Batley Bulldogs in 2006.
Nicknamed ‘Hatchet,’ Harland was a respected second-rower who also represented Yorkshire and the Great Britain under-21 team. Castleford Tigers issued a statement on social media expressing their sadness at his passing, highlighting his 227 first-team appearances at Wheldon Road from 1995 to 2004. The club offered their deepest condolences to his family and friends.
The Tigers’ players association also paid tribute, recalling Harland’s debut against Oldham RLFC in March 1995 and his 227 appearances for the club, during which he scored 26 tries and accumulated 104 points. They described him as a friend, colleague and rugby league comrade, extending sympathies to his loved ones and fellow players.
Former Leeds teammate Gary Mercer shared his sorrow on social media, saying: “I am so sad to hear of Lee’s passing. I was privileged to have played with and against Lee, it is so sad, a top player and a great competitor.” Another ex-Rhinos player, Graham Holroyd, remembered him as a “great lad” and noted their early days as substitutes at Leeds. He concluded, “Rest in peace Hatch.”
Leeds Rhinos also commented, posting on social media: “Sending our condolences to the family and friends of former [Castleford] player Lee Harland who passed away this week. Lee began his career at Leeds, making his debut in the 1992-93 season and playing eight times for the club. RIP.”
