Leicester City bargain who Russell Martin loves is already proving worth after late arrival

Emil Riis has led Leicester City's line since signing and he's proved to be a bargain signing

Emil Riis

Emil Riis is the striker Leicester City have been crying out for. During Tuesday night's 4-0 win over Bromley, the Dane endured a frustrating evening in front of goal before finally getting his reward in the 67th minute.

The Foxes' centre-forward first skied a thunderous volley over the bar before seeing a header come back off the post, with both chances arriving within five minutes. After the break, Sammy Braybrooke picked him out at the back post, but Riis miscontrolled the ball and surrendered possession.

In the past, Leicester's strikers have too often allowed frustration to affect their performances, offering little in response when chances have gone begging. Riis, however, showed a different side to his game against Bromley.

Shortly after the hour, Riis was first to a loose ball inside Leicester's half. Ten seconds later, he was in the opposition box to tuck away his fifth goal for the club. As he turned to celebrate with Sammy Braybrooke, a huge smile spread across his face.

The 28-year-old has now scored four goals in six League One appearances since joining Leicester, offering a more consistent goal threat than the club had from Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew in the Championship.

Riis joined Leicester from Bristol City on deadline day, after the Robins strengthened their own attacking options by signing Dom Ballard and Lorent Tolaj during the summer. He arrived alongside Admir Bristric to bolster Leicester's centre-forward options, but Riis had been Martin's primary target throughout the transfer window.

"It's a huge signing for us and he's been first choice," Martin said. "It's taken a long while because we had to see who was going to leave the building for us and what was going to be available."

He added: "He could have gone to a lot of places again and played at a higher level than this, but he wanted to be here. He's someone I admired when I played against him a lot in our teams and now he's going to help us."

Leicester fans are already beginning to trust Riis to make the most of a chance whenever he is played through on goal. That confidence is invaluable for a striker, and it is something the Foxes have lacked for too long. For a fee of around £2m, Leicester appear to have found the reliable goalscorer they have been searching for.
