India produced a superb second-half performance to defeat Japan 4-1 in the final of the 2026 Asian Champions Trophy, securing a record-extending sixth title. The Indian men's hockey team recovered from an early setback to dominate the closing stages and complete a memorable championship victory.
Japan took an unexpected lead in the third minute through Kazumasa Matsumoto, who found the net with a powerful reverse-hit shot. The early goal put India under pressure, forcing the hosts to chase the game against a disciplined Japanese defence.
Despite creating opportunities and enjoying periods of possession, India struggled to convert their attacks into goals during the opening half. Japan went into the break with a narrow 1-0 advantage.
India's breakthrough arrived in the 42nd minute through Shilanand Lakra. After a series of penalty-corner attempts, Aditya Lalage delivered a reverse-pass that found Lakra in a dangerous position. The forward made no mistake from close range to restore parity.
Japan challenged the goal, arguing that the pass involved dangerous play, but the video umpire upheld the decision. The equaliser changed the momentum of the contest, giving India the confidence to push forward.
The final quarter proved decisive as India turned their comeback into a commanding win. Dilpreet Singh put India ahead in the 48th minute after receiving an excellent pass from Hardik Singh. The goal gave the hosts the advantage they had been searching for throughout the match.
Five minutes later, Jugraj Singh extended India's lead with a powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner. Japan were struggling to contain India's attacking pressure, and Vivek Sagar Prasad added another goal in the 54th minute, converting a rebound with a superb half-volley.
