The New York Jets are struggling again, and frustration among their fans continues to grow.
Their 28-25 loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins dropped second-year head coach Aaron Glenn’s team’s record to 2-5. With results failing to improve, some fans are beginning to wonder whether the Jets need a coaching change.
Amid the growing criticism, WFAN radio host Tommy Lugauer has floated an idea that is dividing the fanbase: bringing back former head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan remains a familiar name in New York, having led the Jets to consecutive AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010.
“I think about the options for the Jets, Rex Ryan to me, he’s climbing the ranks for the candidates that I’m thinking about in terms of the Jets,” Lugauer said.
His comments quickly sparked debate among Jets fans. One fan supported the move, writing, “Rex would handle the situation perfectly. He has history here, he can handle the owner, the New York media is not a problem for him. It’s a Rex Ryan or Jon Gruden for me.”
Another fan preferred a different candidate, saying, “I like Rex and he’d be a nice sentimental choice but if the Jets don’t go all in on Mike Tomlin they are bigger idiots than I think they are. Problem is if I was Tomlin I’d say no. Who wants to work for Wacky Woody?”
Others believe Ryan’s familiarity with the franchise could work in his favor. “Rex could finish the job. He knows how to treat players. He’s comes from a football pedigree. He’s had his eyes on the Jets this whole time,” one commenter wrote.
Another fan echoed that sentiment, writing, “Rex was the last good coach we had. Players play for him. Hire him. How many good coaches want to coach this team when Woody is the owner?”
Not everyone is convinced that bringing Ryan back would solve the Jets’ problems. One fan was baffled by the idea of Ryan returning in 2026 and used a Tim Robinson GIF to show their frustration.
Another fan was more direct in criticizing Ryan’s coaching record. “Enough with Rex. Jeez. His teams got worse every year, the team had ridiculous penalty numbers (especially personal fouls), and he also had [Explicit] time mgmt skills. Why are some fans so in love with the idea?”
A different commenter argued that the franchise should focus on finding a younger coach with an offensive background. “Rex had success in NY, then crashed and burned here and in Buffalo. It’s time to move forward with a young, energetic offensive minded coach.”
Tomlin also remained a popular alternative among fans. “A better fit would be a guy in the broadcast booth at night… Mike Tomlin. That and an actual QB. Get the QB and Tomlin might consider it,” one fan wrote.
Ryan last served as an NFL head coach with the Buffalo Bills in 2015 and 2016. Since leaving the sidelines, he has been working as an ESPN analyst.
Although his past success with the Jets could make him an appealing option, Ryan would face the challenge of returning to a head-coaching position after nearly 10 years away from the role.
Meanwhile, Glenn continues to face pressure as the Jets look to get their season back on track. The team currently ranks 22nd overall in PFN’s Team Impact Metric, with an offensive rating of 73.2 and a defensive rating of 74.2.
They sit third in the AFC East and will look to respond when they face the Las Vegas Raiders next.
