Harwich secure 33-0 win over Bury St Edmunds Wolves

The match was played on Saturday, October 24, in 30mph winds and lashing rain.

Harwich were determined to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the season against Thurston Rangers last time out.

Bury St Edmunds started brightly, pinning Harwich back on their own try line.

But Harwich’s quick defensive line repeatedly stopped Bury’s attacks.

Harwich eventually won a turnover and launched a counter-attack, but an unforced error killed their momentum.

Harwich opened the scoring shortly thereafter.

Inside centre Lewis Williams spotted space behind the Bury defence and threaded through a grubber kick.

Andrew Sterry gathered it and crossed for the opening try.

Sam Parker added the conversion, putting the home side ahead at 7-0.

As the weather worsened, Harwich switched to direct, physical rugby.

Harwich’s forwards drove through the middle and pulled in the Bury defence.

Sterry then burst through for his second try beneath the posts, and Parker converted to make it 14-0.

Harwich piled forward and returned to the Bury 22 in search of a third try.

Scrum-half Will Ovenden scooped up a loose ball and kept the move alive with an offload.

A Bury defender knocked the ball backwards, and Gareth Sanders-Crook pounced to bundle over the line.

Parker's conversion brought the score to 21-0 at half-time.

Harwich continued to control possession after the break.

Sterry broke the defensive line again and offloaded to Williams, who scored beneath the posts.

Parker converted, making it 28-0.

The game became a battle of attrition, with chances increasingly rare.

Harwich added one final try after piling pressure on Bury’s defence.

Bury faced a scrum deep in their own territory before Bradley Durrant’s powerful hit forced a knock-on.

Ovenden reacted first to dot down in the corner, but the conversion was missed, leaving the final score 33-0.

Harwich return to the road on Saturday, October 31, against Felixstowe 1st XV.
