Sheffield United will welcome back Kalvin Phillips for tomorrow’s trip to Charlton Athletic - but fellow midfielder Joe Rothwell has had to go under the knife on a groin issue. The latter picked up the issue in the warm-up before last Friday’s win over Wrexham.
He was replaced late on on the bench by Jamal Baptiste and United were further depleted in the middle of the park when Phillips missed the win at Preston North End with an ankle problem he picked up against the Welshmen.
The former England international is available for selection against Nathan Jones’ Charlton as the Blades look to continue their positive momentum into the international break with another result.
But on Rothwell, Wilder revealed: “Joe's got to have a minor op that he's going to keep him out until after the international break. So he might miss the Watford and Southampton games.
“But the game afterwards, he will be available for selection. He just had a little tweak in the groin area and he went for a scan.
So just a little tidy up in that area. And he'll be back after the break. So he misses out the weekend. Everybody was good. And everybody's ready to go again.”
Patrick Bamford will undergo another fitness test before the Blades travel down south, having injured his shoulder scoring the equaliser against Derby a few weeks ago.
“We've got a late fitness test on Pat, but Kalvin's passed fit,” Wilder added. “He trained yesterday. So yeah, Kalvin's definitely on the train to London this afternoon and we’re waiting to see regarding Pat today.
“He's been out on the grass and doing some work. But the obvious one is the physical contact that he has to get through. So it’s no good in being able to run around and check and turn and pass it, without putting him through that final test.
“So fingers crossed he'll come through that and he'll travel with us. It's one that's position-specific as well. Up against two or three centre-halves that potentially might be playing again.
“So we'll see. He'll be involved in everything we do this morning and the decision will be left late. And if he is, that's great news for us.”
Phillips was this week named United’s player of the month for October, with his consistent performances in the middle of the park recognised by supporters.
“Kalvin’s made a real impact, off the pitch and most importantly on it,” said Wilder of the Manchester City loan man. “His performances have been really good. He coincides with us picking up a little bit of speed and a bit of momentum as well.
“He's been at the heartbeat of that. I’ve said all along the impact that potentially he could have, and he has. The deal that was put together was an outstanding one.
“And the player, first and foremost, wanted to come and play for me and our football club. And is fully all-in, committed and producing the performances that are improving us game by game.”
