Bruno Fernandes is reportedly hoping to win back the support of Manchester United fans by making a concerted effort to engage with them after being dropped for the defeat to Bournemouth.
The Portuguese international came under fire from United supporters after questioning head coach Michael Carrick’s tactics last week. He was subsequently left out of the starting line-up for the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Fernandes received a mixed reception when he warmed up during Sunday’s match, in which he remained an unused substitute. Since then, he has reportedly made an effort to stop and meet as many fans as possible during his trips to Carrington for training.
Fernandes reported to the Carrington training complex on Monday for treatment, despite the players being given the day off for recovery.
According to The Sun, the 32-year-old made a greater effort than usual to stop for autographs both when arriving at and leaving the training ground. Fernandes typically drives straight into Carrington, but he reportedly took extra time to engage with supporters as he looks to rebuild their backing.
He continued those efforts on Tuesday when he attended the annual Manchester United Foundation Dream Day, spending time with fans living with serious illnesses.
“It’s very special for us to be here and be able to give a little bit of joy to the kids and their families. It’s always a very proud moment for us to make their day.
“They are always so positive and have such kind words, that energy goes both ways and this is what Manchester United is all about. It is part of the culture of the club.”
Fernandes has also reportedly held clear-the-air talks with Carrick ahead of United’s trip to face Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.
BBC Sport reports that the pair spoke privately at the club’s training ground on Tuesday, although it remains unclear whether Fernandes apologised for his criticism of the tactics used against Como.
Carrick is set to remain in charge for Saturday lunchtime’s fixture at Stamford Bridge, as discussions continue over potential managerial replacements.
The club’s board reportedly believes Carrick deserves another opportunity to turn United’s fortunes around. However, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have already been shortlisted as potential candidates for the position, while Antonio Conte is also believed to be interested in the job.
