Rotherham United welcome Shrewsbury Town to the New York Stadium on Saturday for the next League Two fixture.

Last Time Out

The Shrews were last on Rotherham soil in February 2025 with the game looking like it was going to end goalless until Taylor Perry stuck the ball in the net to give the visitors the lead on sixty-eight minutes. A Joe Powell cross on seventy-six minutes found Hakeem Odoffin who equalised but a minute later the Shrews were back in front after John Marquis scored to give the visitors the three points.

Other New York Stadium Games

March 2022 saw Shrewsbury at the New York Stadium and saw them go ahead with a Daniel Udoh goal on thirty-six minutes with things getting worse for the hosts two minutes later after an Angus MacDonald elbow on Luke Leahy saw him red carded leaving the Millers with ten men. Despite Josh Vickers in the Millers goal originally clearing a shot from Ryan Bowman the ball fell at the feet of Elliot Bennett on seventy-eight minutes to make it two-nil with Bowman adding another in time added on.

The 2017/18 season saw the Millers and Shrews meet firstly in November in a league game which was a win for the visitors, despite them going down to ten men eight minutes into the second half. The hosts had a chance to go in front when Toto Nsiala fouled Richie Towell in the penalty area but a stunning save from Dean Henderson stopped Kieffer Moore getting his fourteenth goal of the season. Two minutes later Jon Nolan opened the scoring for the Shrews with Towell equalising on seventy-six minutes after Abu Ogogo had been sent off for a wild challenge on Shaun Cummings. With it looking like it would be a point apiece Stefan Payne got the winner for Shrewsbury four minutes into time added on.   The second meeting was in the League One Play-Offs in May at Wembley when Richard Wood put the hosts in front on thirty-two minutes.  Shrewsbury equalised  just before the hour mark through Alex Rodman sending the tie into extra-time when a cross from Joe Newell on the hundred and third minute found Wood who put the ball in for the winner off the post with ‘Ohhhh, Richard Wood is magic, he wears a magic hat . . . .’ resounding round Wembley.

The first time the teams met at the New York Stadium was in League One in August 2013 in a game which Millers Manager Steve Evans wasn’t impressed at all with his teams first half showing. A certain Jon Taylor gave the visitors a first-half lead on twenty-one minutes with Alex Revell levelling it up twelve minutes into the second half. Five minutes later the Shrews were back in front courtesy of Tom Bradshaw but Daniel Nardiello, who’d only been on the pitch a couple of minutes off the bench, made it two-two on sixty-nine minutes. Unfortunately, Nardiello was shown a yellow card for unsporting behaviour towards the end of the game and, as the final whistle went, he ran over to referee Dean Whitestone to argue some more and was promptly shown a second yellow.

Don Valley Games

A League two game at the Don Valley Stadium, temporary home to the Millers, in October 2011 saw two first half goals give the pair a point each, Lewis Grabban scoring for the hosts and Shane Cansdell-Sheriff for Shrewsbury.  The season before saw the Shrews beat the Millers at Don Valley with James Colling scoring twice and sandwiched in between was a Nicky Wroe spot-kick. A consolation on seventy minutes from Adam Le Fondre made it three-one to the visitors.  And February 2010 saw the pair at Don Valley in League Two when again Le Fondre was on the score sheet via a twelve minute penalty. But, the stroke of half-time saw Steven Leslie get a point for the visitors.

Millmoor

The last time the two met at Millmoor was in November 2007 which saw a first goal for Ryan Taylor on thirty-eight minutes with Derek Holmes making sure ten minutes from time and but for some poor finishing and some heroic goalkeeping by the visitors Glynn Garner it could have been a much bigger scoreline. The game is also in the history books when, with two minutes left, Paul Hurst came off the subs bench to break the record for the most appearances for Rotherham United.

August 1999 saw first half goals from Andy Turner, Rob Scott and two from Darren Garner enough to give the Millers the points while in October 1998 Lee Steele’s sixth minute goal sent the Shrews home with all three points.
