The centre-back is yet to feature for Rovers after sustaining a thigh injury in the early weeks of pre-season.
Given Wharton's history, Rovers have been patient and slowly eased him back into training, as well as three Under-21 matches. He played his second 90 in succession on Monday night in a 4-2 win for Paul Butler's side.
The form of the first team has meant the 29-year-old must be patient for an opportunity too, with plenty of competition at centre-back.
"I've had two games now and a few weeks of training," Wharton told RoversTV.
"I feel good; I am getting fitter and sharper. It's nice to see the lads doing well; there is good confidence and competition at the minute.
"For me, missing pre-season, it's been beneficial to get a few weeks of training under my belt.
"At the same time, I need to be ready like everyone else to be called upon. We know what the league is like; it's demanding. There will be injuries and suspensions with lots of games.
"It's a big squad effort and it's positive that the lads are doing well."
Unlike last season, Wharton has not been thrown in at the deep end. With the team struggling, he was overplayed and that resulted in a four-month lay-off.
It is not needs-must this time around, with Hayden Carter, Tom Atcheson and Sean McLoughlin fit and already fighting over two starting places.
Tony Mowbray is getting far more out of largely the same group of players, which is a credit to him and also the players, who have benefitted from adaptation time.
Wharton is delighted to see the team doing well in his absence and praised the Rovers boss for the impact he's had.
"I think everyone can see the difference that he has made in the first 12 games," he reflected.
"A lot of the boys are showing their true colours and expressing themselves. It is a positive for lots of players because it is how they want to play.
"You're seeing more players come out of their shells in the squad, which is good. The start we've had is great for the group and the whole building.
"He is very good at getting the best out of people; he loves the football club, so credit to him."
"We have three more games until the break; hopefully we can get more points," he added.
"There are some exciting games coming up. Then another break before the big game against Burnley.
"The lads are confident about picking up the points."
