The New York Jets lost their third consecutive contest on Sunday, losing a high-scoring shootout 38-33 to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8.
It goes down as a missed opportunity for the players and coaching staff to end this ongoing losing streak. One particular strategic shift in the second half made absolutely no sense.
The Jets ran the football extremely well throughout the first half. The offense had 23 rushing attempts that gained 140 yards, averaging 6.09 yards per carry. Braelon Allen surpassed 100 rushing yards before halftime.
For whatever inexplicable reason, offensive coordinator Frank Reich abandoned the run throughout the second half. They had four rushing attempts (!) in the third/fourth quarter for 26 yards. Despite averaging 6.5 YPC during the second half, Coach Reich shifted to a pass-happy approach.
Before blowing the game, the Jets possessed a two-score lead at times throughout the second half. Game-script didn't force the Jets to abandon the run. Coach Reich simply choose to do so, and head coach Aaron Glenn should have intervened.
The Jets offense had the fewest rushing attempts of any NFL team throughout the second half of Week 8 games. That was truly a mind-boggling decision that deserves explaining. This coaching staff continues to look clueless.
