The Atlanta Falcons are about to play their third NFC South matchup of the 2026 season in Week 8. This time, they'll be going on the road to face Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who obliterated the rival Carolina Panthers by 30 points on their own field last week.
Here are four key matchups we will be watching on Sunday afternoon.
Penix has been excellent against man defense this season and he just lit up the Niners' zone-heavy scheme. Now he faces a very different type of challenge going against Tampa head coach Todd Bowles, who's one of the most blitz-happy defensive playcallers in the game. In two and a half seasons, Penix has only faced the Bucs once in his career, posting a solid line of 298 yards, one touchdown and no picks in the 2025 season opener. Younghoe Koo missed a game-tying field goal which overshadowed Penix's clutch play late.
If the Falcons have to air the ball out a lot they'll need a big game from top wide receiver Drake London. However, he got shut down the last time he faced the Buccaneers, managing just eight catches on 15 targets for 55 yards and no touchdowns. London should have a good challenge lining up across from Jacob Parrish, who leads the NFL with 11 pass breakups so far this season. He's only allowed a 54.8% completion rate and a 73.8 passer rating in coverage.
At the line of scrimmage, the toughest matchup belongs to starting center Ryan Neuzil, who has to go up against the absolute unit that is Vita Vea. Neuzil is having a decent season thus far, grading out at 66.3 overall, which ranks 12th among qualifying centers. If the Buccaneers are going to stop Bijan Robinson, it'll begin with the 347-pound Vea, who will look to shed Neuzil and clog up the middle as much as possible. It's more than likely that the Falcons will send extra help for Neuzil, though.
On the other side of the line of scrimmage, the most-intriguing matchup is between Tampa's star left tackle Tristan Wirfs and Atlanta's sack leader, Za'Darius Smith. In just five games, Smith has posted 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss. Meanwhile, Wirfs has the second-best pass blocking grade (86.5) among offensive tackles this year.
