Mike Hussey will be part of Australia's coaching staff for two of the biggest assignments on their upcoming calendar. He has been named consultant coach for the 2027 Ashes and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, and he will also be the side's T20 advisor through the cycle that builds towards the 2028 LA Olympics and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2028.
The appointment comes soon after Hussey’s eight-year stint as CSK’s batting coach came to an end. He had held the role since 2018 and was relieved this year as the franchise resets with a new coaching staff.
His work with Australia begins later this month, when Australia host England in a T20I series. Hussey will also help the team prepare for the Test series against New Zealand.
Cricket Australia (CA) elaborated in a release that Hussey’s T20 role covers a lot of ground, ranging from “campaign strategy, opposition insights, player scouting and performance.”
Hussey said he was looking forward to a more formal role with the team.
"I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years," he said. "This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period."
With Test cricket taking up most of Australia's next year, Ben Oliver, General Manager of National Teams, said the aim was to keep the shortest format in focus.
"With a heavy schedule of Test cricket over the coming 12 months Mike will work closely with team management, coaches and selectors to provide additional T20 support during this time," Oliver said.
"Mike has extensive T20 experience and we look forward to the impact that he will have on the team as we prepare for the LA Olympics and T20 World Cup in 2028."
After his playing days, Hussey also built an international coaching career outside of the IPL, working with both Australia and England. He was part of England's staff when they won the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Head coach Andrew McDonald said: "Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players. Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person."
