India mounted an improbable chase against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on Saturday, October 24, recovering from a precarious position to secure a four-wicket victory. The Men in Blue found themselves in deep trouble at 112 for six in the 15th over, yet still managed to hunt down the 181-run target through a blistering 68-run assault in the final 4.5 overs. Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy played gutsy knocks to steer India home, with Naman Dhir also contributing significantly to the successful chase.

Dinesh Karthik highlighted how India's lower-order batters had turned the contest on its head despite the initial stutter. The former India wicketkeeper-batter offered his perspective on the remarkable turnaround and the quality of cricket on display at the venue.

"The chase, at no point, felt like that India have no chance. It always felt like if one guy comes good, it is going to happen. Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, they were phenomenal. It is just brilliant to see India's top five not doing much and still India pulled off a heist in front of New Zealand's eyes,' Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

How did India stage their remarkable comeback?

New Zealand dominated most of the match, with only India's opening powerplay offering any meaningful resistance to their control. Karthik acknowledged the visitors' composure and power in the closing stages, particularly praising Varma's ability to accelerate under mounting pressure. The Christchurch pitch had produced compelling cricket through the balance it struck between bat and ball, with the contest remaining finely poised until the final overs.

"New Zealand were in control for most of the game, barring the first powerplay. So, it is just phenomenal to see the kind of power, the composure. Tilak Varma, I thought he started rather sedately. The way he was able to pick it up and, under pressure, hit those boundaries," Karthik added.

What made the pitch and final overs so compelling?

Karthik emphasised that totals in the 160 to 180 range create the most entertaining T20 cricket, with bowlers and batters locked in constant tactical combat. The drama unfolded right until the penultimate delivery, with Varma's intensity and determination evident throughout the closing stages of the chase.

"I vouch for these pitches. 160-180 make the best type of T20 cricket. There is a bit of cat and mouse, bowlers have their say. There were big boundaries, you saw running between the wickets, hustling, confusion. Tilak Varma, up until the penultimate ball, was angry with his partner for not running the second, so much drama," Karthik said.
