As Florian Wirtz continues to split the Liverpool fanbase over his ability and place in the team long-term, another former player has discussed whether he should stay or leave

Former Liverpool star Djibril Cisse believes it is on Andoni Iraola to find a way to get the most out of Florian Wirtz, amid questions about the star's long-term future with the Reds.

The Germany international has been the subject of a pretty thorough examination during the early weeks of the season so far, as fans and pundits alike look for him to establish himself as a quality presence in the team.

After a difficult campaign last time out, there was some understanding and patience toward the playmaker, with some grace given over the fact that he was new to the Premier League and walked into a Liverpool team that was far from settled.

However, expectations have risen for season two, and after a few weeks of action, some fans have already lost patience and written him off. Others, on the other hand, continue to back Wirtz to shine at some point, believing that he can reach the heights expected of him if he is given the right platform to do so.

The past week or so has been positive in that regard for the 23-year-old, with impressive performances against the likes of LASK, Brentford, and Villarreal. There are tougher challenges ahead, however, and an understanding that the consistency and output must continue.

For those who aren't convinced, like former Manchester United duo Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, there have been instructions for the Reds to discard Wirtz at the end of the season.

That is not the view of someone like Cisse, however, with the former Liverpool star calling upon Iraola to find a way to get the best out of the attacking midfielder.

Speaking to Mr Gamble, he said: "Should Liverpool move on from Florian Wirtz? Every coach and every club has its own way of doing things. Maybe the coach still hopes to see the best possible Wirtz, still wants to work with him and help him improve, so the team can benefit from his talent. That’s more a question for the coach.

"Either way, he remains a fantastic player. If he gets back to his best, he’s a player you have to keep in your squad because he’s magnificent."

It continues to split the debate surrounding Wirtz and his place in the team moving forward, as Liverpool still looks to get some consistent output from the star.

Teams have been linked with a move if he is available in the market, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich claimed to be showing interest in the 23-year-old in the coming months if the Reds decide to consider an exit.

That in itself shows the quality is there for teams to be interested, but it is on the manager to find that quality, so the results can continue flowing too.

It remains to be seen what will follow for Wirtz, in what has been a tricky year or so for the star, but he will be hoping the recent uptick in form can continue, which will help win over any remaining doubters.
